\u201cTwenty years ago, I was an emergency room nurse at St. Anne\u2019s,\u201d she said. \u201cI was working the night Claire Whitmore was brought in after the Laurel Street fire.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hearing my name from her sounded strange.<\/p>\n

Stronger than I felt.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was seventeen,\u201d Margaret said. \u201cBurned over most of her body. Barely conscious. And every time she opened her eyes, she asked one question.\u201d<\/p>\n

Daniel\u2019s expression changed.<\/p>\n

The words struck harder now that everyone could hear them.<\/p>\n
