For most of my adult life, I thought I was among the fortunate ones.<\/p>\n

Fifteen years of marriage had given me a woman I loved deeply and four beautiful children.<\/p>\n

Then, on a normal Tuesday, Sarah came home from work looking pale and unsteady.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think I just need to lie down,\u201d she told me, brushing my concern away. \u201cIt\u2019s probably nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re burning up, Sarah. Let me drive you to the hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t scare the kids. I\u2019ll be fine by morning.\u201d<\/p>\n

She was not fine by morning.<\/p>\n

Less than forty-eight hours later, a doctor told me she was gone.<\/p>\n

I do not remember driving home that night.<\/p>\n

I only remember standing in the doorway of our bedroom, staring at her side of the bed, unable to walk inside.<\/p>\n

I did not know then that she had died carrying a terrible secret on her conscience.<\/p>\n

The funeral came and went in broken pieces.<\/p>\n

Neighbors brought casseroles.<\/p>\n

People hugged me and murmured words I could not keep in my mind.<\/p>\n

Through all of it, the four kids stayed pressed close to my legs like ducklings terrified of losing their last parent.<\/p>\n

The first morning after the burial, Joan climbed into my lap before sunrise. \u201cDaddy, are you going to get sick too?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, sweetheart. I\u2019m not going anywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPromise?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI promise.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jeremy shuffled in behind her, dragging the blanket Sarah had sewn his name onto.<\/p>\n

He said nothing.<\/p>\n

He simply climbed up and pressed his cheek against my chest.<\/p>\n

Julie stood watching from the doorway.<\/p>\n

\u201cDaddy, who\u2019s going to braid Joan\u2019s hair for school?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll learn,\u201d I told her. \u201cGive me a week. I\u2019ll be terrible at first.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMom did a fishtail.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen I\u2019ll learn a fishtail.\u201d<\/p>\n

Joyce slipped past her sister and pulled at my sleeve.<\/p>\n

\u201cCan we eat cereal for breakfast?\u201d Joyce asked. \u201cMom always made pancakes on Saturdays, but I don\u2019t want pancakes today.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCereal it is.\u201d<\/p>\n
