Then I wiped my eyes because Jeremy came in looking for his stuffed rabbit.<\/p>\n

He sat beside me, leaned against my arm, and stayed there for a long time.<\/p>\n

The days after that blurred into a slow gray cycle of school drop-offs, half-eaten meals, and bedtime stories I could barely finish without my voice breaking.<\/p>\n

I told myself I only had to survive one hour at a time.<\/p>\n

I thought, eventually, things might become easier.<\/p>\n

But a knock at the door proved the nightmare had only just begun.<\/p>\n

The knock came a little after three in the afternoon.<\/p>\n

I expected a neighbor, or maybe one of Sarah\u2019s friends coming to check on the children.<\/p>\n

Instead, when I opened the door, my mother-in-law was standing on the porch, holding a small wooden box tightly against her chest.<\/p>\n

\u201cCan I come in?\u201d she asked, though she was already stepping past me.<\/p>\n

I closed the door slowly.<\/p>\n

The children were upstairs, their quiet footsteps the only sound in the house.<\/p>\n

She walked directly to the kitchen and set the box on the table.<\/p>\n

No hug.<\/p>\n

No question about how the kids were managing.<\/p>\n

\u201cSarah made me promise,\u201d she said, turning toward me. \u201cIf anything ever happened to her, you were supposed to get this.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stared at the box.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy would she give something like this to you?\u201d I asked. \u201cShe was thirty-six years old. She wasn\u2019t sick.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know what\u2019s inside. She just made me swear.\u201d<\/p>\n

Something about her voice sounded practiced, like she had repeated that sentence in the car before coming inside.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t seem upset to be here,\u201d I said quietly.<\/p>\n

She tilted her head. \u201cExcuse me?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou buried your daughter four days ago. And you\u2019re standing in my kitchen like you came to deliver a package.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her jaw tightened. \u201cDon\u2019t twist this. I\u2019m honoring her wishes. That\u2019s all.\u201d<\/p>\n

She picked up her purse and turned toward the door. \u201cOpen it when you\u2019re ready. But open it alone.\u201d<\/p>\n

The door shut behind her, and the house went silent again.<\/p>\n

I sat at the table and stared at the box for a long time.<\/p>\n

What could Sarah have left for me?<\/p>\n

My hands shook when I finally lifted the lid.<\/p>\n

There were no keepsakes inside.<\/p>\n

Only papers.<\/p>\n

Once I began reading them, I realized Sarah had been hiding an enormous secret from me.<\/p>\n

There was a thick stack of bank statements fastened together with a black clip.<\/p>\n
