I slowly turned toward my mother-in-law.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat doesn\u2019t he know?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

Carol pressed a trembling hand to her mouth. Mark looked between us, angry again, but now there was panic beneath it.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom,\u201d he snapped, \u201cwhat are you talking about?\u201d<\/p>\n

Carol\u2019s eyes filled with tears. \u201cNot here.\u201d<\/p>\n

I gave one short laugh, though nothing was funny. \u201cYou didn\u2019t stop him from humiliating me in this room. You don\u2019t get privacy now.\u201d<\/p>\n

The nurse quietly asked if I wanted Mark removed. I said, \u201cNot yet.\u201d<\/p>\n

Carol sank back into the chair as if her legs had failed. \u201cWhen Mark was twenty-two, before he met you, he got very sick. There was an infection after a surgery. The doctors told us there was a strong chance he might never have children naturally.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mark stared at her. \u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n

She looked ashamed. \u201cYour father and I didn\u2019t tell you everything. You were already depressed after the hospitalization. We thought\u2026 we thought it would destroy you.\u201d<\/p>\n

My heart hammered. \u201cAre you saying Mark may not be able to father a child?\u201d<\/p>\n

Carol gave a weak nod. \u201cThe doctor told us it was possible, but unlikely.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mark stepped back like the floor had moved beneath him. \u201cThat\u2019s a lie.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not,\u201d Carol whispered. \u201cI kept the records.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mark looked at me then, and for the first time since his cruel accusation, fear crossed his face.<\/p>\n

But my anger did not fade. It grew colder.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou accused me of cheating,\u201d I said. \u201cYou looked at our daughter, thirty minutes after I pushed her into this world, and your first thought was suspicion.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mark swallowed. \u201cI didn\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat doesn\u2019t excuse anything.\u201d<\/p>\n

He dragged both hands over his face. \u201cI heard things.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat things?\u201d<\/p>\n

He hesitated.<\/p>\n

I waited.<\/p>\n

Finally, he said, \u201cA text. From my brother. He said Lily didn\u2019t look like me. He said you were too close with your coworker, Ethan.\u201d<\/p>\n

I almost laughed again. Ethan was sixty-three, happily married, and had only advised me about maternity leave. Mark had taken gossip from his reckless brother and turned it into a weapon.<\/p>\n

Rachel called back within minutes. I answered on speaker.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can file as soon as you\u2019re ready,\u201d she said. \u201cBut Emily, are you safe?\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked at Mark.<\/p>\n

He looked smaller than I had ever seen him.<\/p>\n

Before I could answer, Carol reached into her purse, pulled out an old folded envelope, and held it toward Mark.<\/p>\n

\u201cRead it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Mark opened it with shaking hands.<\/p>\n
