My father stared at Daniel as if the words had been spoken in another language.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is this?\u201d he demanded. \u201cWho are you?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDaniel Brooks,\u201d he said, pulling a business card from his jacket and offering it. \u201cEmily\u2019s attorney.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dad did not take it. His gaze went from Daniel to me, then to the tubes, IV bags, and monitor flashing beside my bed. For the first time that night, fear broke through his expression. Only briefly. Richard Carter had always known how to turn guilt into anger before anyone could force him to look at it.<\/p>\n

\u201cEmily, why is a lawyer here?\u201d he asked. \u201cYou scared me half to death.\u201d<\/p>\n

I tried to laugh, but it came out as a cough.<\/p>\n

\u201cI scared you?\u201d<\/p>\n

His lips tightened. \u201cYou know what I mean.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d I whispered. \u201cI really don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

He moved closer, but Daniel shifted half a step between us. Not threateningly, just enough to make clear the room was no longer his.<\/p>\n

Dad looked insulted. \u201cI\u2019m her father.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou were her emergency contact,\u201d Daniel replied. \u201cYou are no longer.\u201d<\/p>\n

That hit him.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n

Daniel opened a folder. \u201cAs of tonight, Emily has revoked your authority to receive medical updates, make decisions on her behalf, access her residence, access her financial accounts, or represent yourself as her next of kin for legal purposes. Her medical proxy is now her friend, Hannah Miller.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dad\u2019s face reddened. \u201cThis is ridiculous. She\u2019s drugged. She doesn\u2019t know what she signed.\u201d<\/p>\n

The nurse by the door spoke at once. \u201cMs. Carter was evaluated before signing. She was alert, oriented, and competent.\u201d<\/p>\n

He looked at her like she had betrayed him.<\/p>\n

\u201cEmily,\u201d he said, lowering his voice. \u201cThis is because I helped Olivia move? Seriously?\u201d<\/p>\n

There it was. The version he could live with. The story where I was petty, jealous, dramatic.<\/p>\n

My weak fingers curled into the blanket.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou were called five times,\u201d I said. \u201cThe surgeon told them I might not make it. You said Olivia needed you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe had movers cancel at the last minute. She was crying. I thought\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou thought I would wait.\u201d<\/p>\n

Silence.<\/p>\n

The machines kept beeping, steady and uncaring.<\/p>\n

Dad rubbed his forehead. \u201cI didn\u2019t understand how serious it was.\u201d<\/p>\n

Daniel took a printed call log from the folder. \u201cThe nurse told you your daughter was in critical condition. She told you surgery was urgent. She told you sepsis had begun.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dad looked at the page but would not take it.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was overwhelmed,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

I studied him. My whole life, I had searched that face for regret, tenderness, some proof that beneath the favoritism and excuses was a father who loved me the way he loved Olivia.<\/p>\n

All I saw was fear of consequences.<\/p>\n

Daniel continued. \u201cThere is one more matter. Emily has also amended the ownership and beneficiary structure of the Carter House Trust.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dad froze.<\/p>\n

The Carter House was not only a house. It had been my mother\u2019s. She left it to me when she died because Dad had already spent most of their savings trying to keep Olivia comfortable after college. I let him live there rent-free for six years because he was my father.<\/p>\n

Dad\u2019s voice lowered. \u201cEmily.\u201d<\/p>\n

I turned toward him.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

\u201cYou can\u2019t be serious.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI almost died tonight,\u201d I said. \u201cAnd you chose Olivia\u2019s furniture.\u201d<\/p>\n

His jaw worked, but nothing came out.<\/p>\n

Daniel closed the folder.<\/p>\n

\u201cMr. Carter, you will receive formal notice within seventy-two hours. For tonight, hospital security has been informed that Emily does not want visitors unless she approves them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dad\u2019s eyes sharpened. \u201cYou\u2019re kicking me out?\u201d<\/p>\n

I held his stare.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d I said. \u201cI\u2019m letting you feel what it\u2019s like to call for family and get no one.\u201d<\/p>\n

For once, Richard Carter had no answer.<\/p>\n
