Her voice shook. As she turned, I saw a dark mark disappear beneath the collar of her blouse.<\/p>\n

At the head of the table, Grant Mercer sliced roast beef like he owned not only the house, but every person sitting inside it. His mother, Evelyn, slowly swirled wine in her glass and watched Claire struggle with a heavy serving dish.<\/p>\n

\u201cUse your good arm,\u201d Evelyn said. \u201cHonestly, young women today make everything so dramatic.\u201d<\/p>\n

I set my handbag down.<\/p>\n

Claire looked at Grant.<\/p>\n

That one look told me enough.<\/p>\n

Evelyn gave a cold little laugh.<\/p>\n

Grant leaned back in his chair, looking proud.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe understands better now.\u201d<\/p>\n

The room went silent. Grant\u2019s brother smirked. His sister kept her eyes on her plate. Claire\u2019s fingers tightened around the serving spoon until her knuckles turned white.<\/p>\n

I had spent thirty years prosecuting men who confused fear with loyalty. I knew the lowered eyes, the careful silence, the rehearsed explanations. And I knew anger only helped when it was controlled.<\/p>\n

I had seen Claire frightened once before, when she was nine and got lost in a crowded train station. Back then, she ran toward my voice the moment she heard it.<\/p>\n

Now she was sitting three feet away from me and could not even meet my eyes.<\/p>\n

Whatever had happened in that house had taught my daughter to be afraid of reaching for me.<\/p>\n

So I smiled.<\/p>\n

Grant shrugged.<\/p>\n

I sat beside her, took her cold hand, and felt her pulse racing. Under the table, I opened my phone and sent one message to a number I had not used in six months.<\/p>\n

Come now. Bring the board. Bring Daniel Ross. Police commissioner if he is willing.<\/p>\n

Then I made another call.<\/p>\n

Grant raised an eyebrow.<\/p>\n

Claire whispered, \u201cI didn\u2019t trip.\u201d<\/p>\n

Grant\u2019s smile vanished.<\/p>\n

Evelyn set her wineglass down.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe fell after becoming hysterical. Grant had to restrain her. A wife should not threaten her husband\u2019s career.\u201d<\/p>\n

That was the first clue.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat career?\u201d I asked mildly.<\/p>\n

Grant smiled again.<\/p>\n

\u201cChief operating officer. The promotion becomes official tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOf Mercer Dynamics?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve heard of us?\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked at Claire. Tears had filled her eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes,\u201d I said. \u201cI have.\u201d<\/p>\n

What Grant did not know was that Mercer Dynamics still existed because my late husband and I had saved it from bankruptcy twenty-two years earlier. Our family trust still controlled thirty-eight percent of the company\u2019s voting shares.<\/p>\n
