I cried through most of the ceremony. Greg clapped politely, nothing more. Liam was accepted into several excellent universities. He eventually chose one known for engineering and assistive technology.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou already make people\u2019s lives better,\u201d I said, kissing his forehead.<\/p>\n

The weeks before his eighteenth birthday passed quickly. My sister Nora insisted we throw him a real celebration at our house.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know Mom thought she was hiding your resentment from me,\u201d Liam said gently. \u201cBut walls are thinner than people think.\u201d<\/p>\n

Greg swallowed.<\/p>\n

\u201cLiam\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

My son lifted one hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease let me finish.\u201d<\/p>\n

His voice was not angry. That made it even harder.<\/p>\n

\u201cI also know Dad blamed Mom for my disability.\u201d<\/p>\n

Several relatives looked at one another. Nora lowered her eyes. Coach Mara folded her arms. Greg forced a nervous laugh.<\/p>\n

\u201cSon, this isn\u2019t the right time.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it is exactly the right time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Liam\u2019s expression stayed steady.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou spent eighteen years believing Mom took something from you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Greg glanced around at the guests.<\/p>\n

\u201cCan we talk about this privately?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d Liam said. \u201cYou made Mom carry it privately long enough.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tears slipped down my face before I realized I was crying. Liam smiled at me gently.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s okay, Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then he looked back at Greg.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know you dreamed of coaching football.\u201d<\/p>\n

Greg gave a small nod.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know Grandpa did that with you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another nod.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I know every time you saw fathers playing with their sons, you looked at Mom like she had stolen your future.\u201d<\/p>\n

Greg\u2019s face turned red. He knew where this was going.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was disappointed,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d Liam replied calmly. \u201cYou were cruel.\u201d<\/p>\n

The words landed heavily. No one spoke. Then Nora\u2019s voice trembled through the silence.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s right, Greg. Cyra has carried guilt for eighteen years that never belonged to her.\u201d<\/p>\n

Owen shook his head slowly.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe all saw pieces of it,\u201d he admitted. \u201cI wish we had spoken sooner.\u201d<\/p>\n

Liam continued.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought maybe if I volunteered, helped people, stayed positive, and never complained\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

His voice broke for the first time.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2026maybe Dad would finally see me.\u201d<\/p>\n

I covered my mouth. Nora wiped her tears.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut eventually,\u201d Liam said, \u201cI realized the problem was never me.\u201d<\/p>\n

He looked straight at Greg.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was the dream you refused to release.\u201d<\/p>\n

Greg finally spoke.<\/p>\n
