Grant stopped in the doorway.<\/p>\n

For one split second, his smile slipped. He had expected confusion, fear, maybe the slow obedience of a woman too drugged to fight back. Instead, he found me conscious, still, and watching him like I was counting down seconds.<\/p>\n

He recovered fast. Pretending had always been one of his talents.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou fainted,\u201d he said, moving closer. \u201cToo much stress. Too little sleep. I told everyone you needed rest.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe board members. The investors. Your staff.\u201d He sat at the edge of the bed and reached for my hand.<\/p>\n

I pulled away.<\/p>\n

His jaw flexed.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou should be grateful,\u201d he murmured. \u201cI handled everything.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sure you did.\u201d<\/p>\n

He examined my face. \u201cDid you hear anything?\u201d<\/p>\n

I let my eyelids lower a little. \u201cLike what?\u201d<\/p>\n

His expression softened again, though his eyes did not. \u201cNothing. You\u2019re exhausted.\u201d<\/p>\n

He turned to the small counter, where a plastic cup of water sat beside a folded packet of documents. I saw the company seal on the first page.<\/p>\n

\u201cDrink,\u201d he said. \u201cThen we\u2019ll go home.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

The word hit harder than I expected.<\/p>\n

Grant looked back slowly. \u201cExcuse me?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI said no.\u201d<\/p>\n

For a moment, the quiet room seemed too small for both of us. He dropped his voice. \u201cEvelyn, don\u2019t make this ugly. You\u2019re unwell. You collapsed in front of half the executive team.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI collapsed after drinking champagne Vanessa handed me.\u201d<\/p>\n

His face stayed still, but his fingers tightened around the cup. \u201cThat\u2019s a serious accusation.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have no proof.\u201d<\/p>\n

The phone on the chair buzzed once.<\/p>\n

Grant glanced toward it.<\/p>\n

I moved quicker than he expected, grabbing it and pressing it to my chest. Ruth Caldwell\u2019s message filled the screen.<\/p>\n

Stay where you are. Security and federal counsel are on-site. Do not sign anything.<\/p>\n

Grant saw enough.<\/p>\n

His mask dropped.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou stupid woman,\u201d he breathed.<\/p>\n

There he was. Not the charming husband at charity events. Not the supportive spouse in business profiles. Just a cornered man in expensive shoes with panic in his eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou were never as smart as you thought,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

He seized my wrist. Hard.<\/p>\n

Pain flashed up my arm, but I did not scream. The door was still open. The hallway camera had a clear view into the room. I had installed those cameras after a former employee threatened me during a layoff. Grant had argued against them.<\/p>\n

He had forgotten they existed.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t understand what you\u2019re doing,\u201d he hissed. \u201cThat company survived because of me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat company existed before I met you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI gave you access. I gave you confidence. I made people take you seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n

I almost laughed. \u201cYou spent my money, wore my name, and slept with my secretary. Don\u2019t confuse proximity with contribution.\u201d<\/p>\n

His grip tightened.<\/p>\n

Then a man spoke from the doorway.<\/p>\n

\u201cMr. Whitmore, remove your hand from your wife.\u201d<\/p>\n

Grant froze.<\/p>\n

Two uniformed security officers stood behind Daniel Pierce, my chief legal officer. Behind him was Ruth Caldwell, silver-haired, composed, and carrying the kind of calm that usually arrived just before someone was destroyed in court.<\/p>\n

Farther down the hall, Vanessa stood between two guards, her face drained white.<\/p>\n

Grant let go.<\/p>\n

Ruth stepped in first. \u201cEvelyn, are you able to speak clearly?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you consent to immediate medical testing by an independent physician?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDid you authorize any transfer of voting rights, emergency executive control, trust access, or company ownership today?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ruth turned to Grant. \u201cThen any documents prepared under that claim are fraudulent.\u201d<\/p>\n

Grant let out a brittle laugh. \u201cThis is insane. My wife is confused.\u201d<\/p>\n

Daniel raised a tablet. \u201cThe boardroom camera recorded Vanessa switching glasses before the toast. The hallway audio recorded your conversation outside this room. And security has already preserved both.\u201d<\/p>\n

Grant\u2019s color vanished.<\/p>\n

Ruth stared at him. \u201cThe injunction was filed eight minutes ago. Your personal accounts connected to Whitmore Biologics are frozen pending review. So are Vanessa Hale\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n

I pushed myself upright slowly, weak but steady.<\/p>\n

Grant looked at me as if the woman in the bed had become a stranger.<\/p>\n

Fair enough.<\/p>\n

For six years, he had known the version of me who loved him.<\/p>\n
