By sunset, everyone would gather in our backyard to watch fireworks over the lake. That was always my favorite part. For a few minutes, no one argued. No one competed. No one tried to win.<\/p>\n

I had not grown up with holidays like that. My childhood celebrations were usually grocery store pie, paper plates, and someone falling asleep before dessert.<\/p>\n

I loosened the drawstring and tipped the pouch into my palm.<\/p>\n

Pearls.<\/p>\n

A full strand, cool and heavy, with a silver clasp shaped like a tiny flower.<\/p>\n

I recognized them instantly from the black-and-white photograph hanging in George and Elaine\u2019s hallway.<\/p>\n

I sucked in a breath.<\/p>\n

\u201cElaine. No.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her eyes filled with tears.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t take these. I barely feel right touching them without gloves.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re not museum pieces, sweetheart. They were meant to be worn.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cElaine\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBy you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her smile trembled.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to give them to you tonight during the toast.\u201d<\/p>\n

My throat tightened.<\/p>\n

\u201cMelissa will hate that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Elaine\u2019s expression changed.<\/p>\n

\u201cMelissa hates anything that does not put her in the center,\u201d she said quietly. \u201cAnd I have spent too many years pretending I don\u2019t see it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s your daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd you are my family.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked down at the pearls again.<\/p>\n

That word still had power over me.<\/p>\n

\u201cBlood makes relatives,\u201d she said. \u201cLove makes family.\u201d<\/p>\n

I blinked quickly.<\/p>\n

She squeezed my hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cHide them somewhere safe until sunset. I want to do this properly.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe bedroom?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cToo many people put bags in there. Maybe the garage cabinet? The tall one near the extra chairs?\u201d<\/p>\n

I nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll lock them up.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then Elaine held my wrist and looked at me carefully.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd Gaia?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDo not let anyone make you forget what you have given this family.\u201d<\/p>\n

Before I could answer, a car door slammed outside.<\/p>\n

I looked through the window and frowned.<\/p>\n

Melissa.<\/p>\n

Three hours early.<\/p>\n

Her husband Ryan climbed out after her carrying a pie box and a bag of ice. He looked exhausted, like he had been listening to the same complaint the entire drive.<\/p>\n

Melissa waved at me through the glass.<\/p>\n

Big smile.<\/p>\n

Yellow heels.<\/p>\n

Floral skirt.<\/p>\n

Melissa treated my home like a store with a very loose return policy.<\/p>\n

Once, she took my navy dress from my closet and wore it to dinner.<\/p>\n
