I slipped the pearl necklace back into the pouch and hurried to the garage before Melissa reached the porch.<\/p>\n

I unlocked the tall cabinet and tucked the pouch behind the spare sprinkler heads. The lock clicked when I turned the key, though the old latch had been loose for months.<\/p>\n

I tugged on it anyway.<\/p>\n

It held.<\/p>\n

At least, I thought it did.<\/p>\n

When I turned around, Melissa was standing at the garage entrance.<\/p>\n

\u201cGood grief,\u201d I said, pressing a hand to my chest. \u201cYou scared me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSorry!\u201d she chirped. \u201cI came to help the perfect hostess.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ryan appeared behind her.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe means hello.\u201d<\/p>\n

Melissa shot him a sharp look.<\/p>\n

I slipped the keys into my pocket.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re early.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know. Isn\u2019t that nice?\u201d Her eyes drifted over the shelves behind me. \u201cNeed chairs? Ice? Tablecloths?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re good.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBug spray?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOn the patio.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her smile tightened.<\/p>\n

Ryan cleared his throat.<\/p>\n

\u201cMel, she said she\u2019s good.\u201d<\/p>\n

I almost laughed, but Melissa turned back to me.<\/p>\n

\u201cGaia knows I mean well.\u201d She tilted her head. \u201cDon\u2019t you?\u201d<\/p>\n

There it was.<\/p>\n

The hook hidden under the sugar.<\/p>\n

I smiled the way I smiled when I refused to start a fight.<\/p>\n

\u201cCome on,\u201d I said. \u201cYou can help Elaine with dessert. She\u2019s making pie from scratch.\u201d<\/p>\n

For the next hour, Melissa performed kindness like she was auditioning for sainthood.<\/p>\n

She carried napkins outside, came back for cups we did not need, and complimented my lemonade twice.<\/p>\n

William leaned close while I arranged corn on a platter.<\/p>\n

\u201cIs it just me, or is Melissa being nice?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not just you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFake nice?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMedium-level fake.\u201d<\/p>\n

He smiled and reached for the platter.<\/p>\n

That was when I heard Elaine speaking in the front room.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m giving it to Gaia tonight,\u201d she told George. \u201cShe has earned it.\u201d<\/p>\n

I froze with cherry juice on my fingers.<\/p>\n

So did Melissa.<\/p>\n

She stood by the counter with her hand hovering over the napkins.<\/p>\n

Her face changed.<\/p>\n

She did not look sad.<\/p>\n

She did not look confused.<\/p>\n

She looked furious.<\/p>\n

Then she noticed me watching.<\/p>\n

\u201cNapkins,\u201d she said loudly, grabbing them. \u201cFound them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey were right next to you,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

\u201cSilly me.\u201d Her laugh had sharp edges. \u201cYou really do get everything, don\u2019t you?\u201d<\/p>\n

I dried my hands.<\/p>\n

\u201cSay what you mean.\u201d<\/p>\n

She stepped closer.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom talks about you like you\u2019re the daughter she always wanted.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMelissa, not today.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not doing anything.\u201d She lifted the napkins. \u201cI\u2019m helping.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d I said quietly. \u201cYou\u2019re circling.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her smile slipped.<\/p>\n

Before she could answer, Mason ran into the kitchen, dripping water.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom, Maisie says I can\u2019t be firework captain.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNobody is firework captain,\u201d I said. \u201cGo outside.\u201d<\/p>\n

Melissa\u2019s eyes flicked toward the hallway.<\/p>\n

As soon as she left, I crossed the driveway and checked the garage cabinet.<\/p>\n

The pouch was still there.<\/p>\n

I told myself to breathe.<\/p>\n

The party continued.<\/p>\n

George guarded his grill tongs like sacred tools. Elaine squeezed my arm whenever she passed. The twins ran wild. Guests laughed. Firework smoke began drifting over the lake.<\/p>\n

That was what I wanted to protect.<\/p>\n

Peace.<\/p>\n

At sunset, William frowned.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere are the sparklers?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGarage. Top shelf.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll get them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, stay with the twins. I\u2019ll go.\u201d<\/p>\n

I crossed the driveway as the first firework cracked over the lake.<\/p>\n

Then the garage side door opened.<\/p>\n

Melissa stepped out.<\/p>\n

We both froze.<\/p>\n

Her face was flushed. Both hands smoothed the front of her floral skirt.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh my God,\u201d she said with a shaky laugh. \u201cYou scared me.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked past her into the dark garage.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat were you doing in there?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI got lost looking for the bathroom.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe bathroom is inside the house, Melissa. You know that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know,\u201d she said too quickly. \u201cI thought there was a door through here.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou took a wrong turn across the driveway and into the garage?\u201d<\/p>\n

Her smile twitched.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s dark.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe patio lights are on.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGaia, move.\u201d<\/p>\n

That did it.<\/p>\n

Not the lie.<\/p>\n

Not even the garage.<\/p>\n

The command.<\/p>\n

I stepped into her path.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat are you hiding?\u201d<\/p>\n

Her eyes flashed.<\/p>\n

\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMelissa.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMove.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShow me.\u201d<\/p>\n

She clutched the front of her skirt with both hands.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s none of your business.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then I saw it.<\/p>\n

A strip of white fabric hanging just below the hem.<\/p>\n

My body went cold before my mind fully understood.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s under your skirt?\u201d<\/p>\n

Her mouth opened, but no words came out.<\/p>\n

\u201cMelissa,\u201d I said slowly. \u201cShow me.\u201d<\/p>\n

She spun toward the gate.<\/p>\n

\u201cStop,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

Her yellow heel caught in a crack near the edge of the driveway.<\/p>\n

She stumbled hard.<\/p>\n

Both hands flew out.<\/p>\n

The white satin pouch slid from beneath her skirt and hit the concrete.<\/p>\n

Pearls spilled out in a soft, terrible scatter.<\/p>\n

For one second, the world went silent.<\/p>\n

Then Melissa lunged.<\/p>\n

I snatched the pouch and gathered the pearls against my palm.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d I whispered.<\/p>\n

She grabbed for my wrist.<\/p>\n

\u201cGive it to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

I pulled back.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is Elaine\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her nails dug into my skin.<\/p>\n

\u201cHand it over, Gaia.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLet go.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you don\u2019t give it to me right now,\u201d she hissed, \u201cI\u2019ll tell everyone you stole it.\u201d<\/p>\n

I yanked my arm free and pulled my phone from my back pocket.<\/p>\n

Melissa\u2019s eyes widened.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat are you doing?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCalling the police.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t you dare.\u201d<\/p>\n

I pressed the phone to my ear and kept my voice steady when the dispatcher answered.<\/p>\n

\u201cI need to report a theft at my home. The person is still here and trying to leave.\u201d<\/p>\n

Melissa stepped closer.<\/p>\n

\u201cHang up, or I\u2019ll scream.\u201d<\/p>\n
