Before Melissa could answer, the back gate swung open.<\/p>\n

William came first.<\/p>\n

Then George and Ryan.<\/p>\n

Elaine followed with one hand pressed to her chest. Behind them, the twins hovered until George pointed them back toward the yard.<\/p>\n

\u201cGaia?\u201d William asked, looking at the pouch in my hand. \u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n

Melissa\u2019s face crumpled instantly.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe attacked me.\u201d<\/p>\n

I held up the pouch.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe came out of our garage with this hidden under her skirt.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s a lie!\u201d Melissa cried. \u201cI caught her with Mom\u2019s necklace.\u201d<\/p>\n

Elaine whispered, \u201cMelissa\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cElaine gave it to me for safekeeping,\u201d I said. \u201cI locked it in the garage cabinet.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ryan closed his eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cMel.\u201d<\/p>\n

William\u2019s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n

\u201cTell me Gaia is wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n

Melissa looked at him.<\/p>\n

\u201cWill\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTell me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe gets everything!\u201d Melissa snapped. \u201cThe cookout. The praise. Mom acting like Gaia is some saint because she drives her to appointments.\u201d<\/p>\n

Elaine\u2019s eyes filled.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou think love is something people steal from you?\u201d<\/p>\n

Melissa turned on her.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe is not your daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d Elaine said. \u201cBut she has loved me like one.\u201d<\/p>\n

George stepped forward.<\/p>\n

\u201cDid you take your mother\u2019s necklace?\u201d<\/p>\n

Melissa looked down.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnswer me,\u201d George said.<\/p>\n

Ryan rubbed a hand over his face.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was angry before we came,\u201d he admitted. \u201cShe said you were making a mistake, Elaine. I didn\u2019t know she would do this.\u201d<\/p>\n

Melissa stared at him.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou were supposed to be on my side.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ryan looked exhausted.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was. For years. I\u2019m tired.\u201d<\/p>\n

A siren chirped once at the curb.<\/p>\n

Melissa turned to me, her eyes hard.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou really called them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI told you I would.\u201d<\/p>\n

Two officers walked up the driveway.<\/p>\n

I stepped forward.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat is my mother-in-law\u2019s necklace,\u201d I said. \u201cShe gave it to me to keep safe. Melissa took it from our garage cabinet and tried to leave with it hidden under her skirt.\u201d<\/p>\n

Melissa scoffed.<\/p>\n

\u201cListen to her. She sounds rehearsed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d William said, stepping beside me.<\/p>\n

The officer turned to Elaine.<\/p>\n

\u201cMa\u2019am?\u201d<\/p>\n

Elaine wiped her face.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe necklace is mine. I trusted Gaia with it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd did Melissa have permission to take it?\u201d<\/p>\n

Elaine looked at her daughter.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

George\u2019s voice cut through the yard.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe did not have permission to be in the garage either.\u201d<\/p>\n

Melissa\u2019s mouth twisted.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo that\u2019s it? Everyone is choosing her?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, Melissa,\u201d Elaine said. \u201cEveryone is choosing the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ryan let out a tired breath.<\/p>\n

\u201cMel, stop. You did this.\u201d<\/p>\n

The officer asked Elaine if she wanted a report.<\/p>\n

\u201cWrite it down,\u201d Elaine said.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom,\u201d Melissa whispered.<\/p>\n

Elaine\u2019s voice trembled, but it did not break.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo one stole your place. You threw it away every time you refused to be happy for your own family.\u201d<\/p>\n

Melissa looked at William.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re letting Mom do this? You\u2019re letting your wife do this?\u201d<\/p>\n

William\u2019s hand settled against my back.<\/p>\n

\u201cGaia isn\u2019t doing this. You are.\u201d<\/p>\n

For once, Melissa had no reply.<\/p>\n

Ryan led her toward the car. At the gate, she turned back.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ll regret this.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stepped forward.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo. This family is done cleaning up after you and calling it peace.\u201d<\/p>\n

The car pulled away.<\/p>\n

After the officers left, the backyard stayed silent until Mason called out,<\/p>\n

\u201cAre we still doing fireworks?\u201d<\/p>\n

George sniffed.<\/p>\n

\u201cAbsolutely. Cold hot dogs and bad behavior do not cancel America.\u201d<\/p>\n

Maisie giggled, and something in all of us loosened.<\/p>\n

Elaine turned to me with the pearls in her hand.<\/p>\n
