The night before we left, I packed sunscreen, tiny swimsuits, and the silk dress I\u2019d last worn on our fifth anniversary.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is going to be good,\u201d I whispered to myself. \u201cThis is going to be a fresh start.\u201d<\/p>\n

The woman in my closet mirror didn\u2019t seem convinced.<\/p>\n

I zipped the suitcase closed and switched off the light.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt my age, my back needs the premium mattress,\u201d she replied. \u201cYou and the children will stay in the ground-floor room by the parking garage. It\u2019s more practical.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked at David, expecting him to correct her.<\/p>\n

He kept staring at his phone.<\/p>\n

But I wasn\u2019t about to let him escape this conversation.<\/p>\n

\u201cDavid,\u201d I said quietly. \u201cThis is our anniversary trip.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMom\u2019s right, honey,\u201d he muttered without lifting his eyes. \u201cThe kids will need to be near the pool anyway. It just makes sense.\u201d<\/p>\n

Beatrice smiled with all the warmth of spoiled milk.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith me, of course,\u201d she answered as though it were the most obvious thing in the world. \u201cThe suite has two bedrooms. You wouldn\u2019t want him losing sleep because of the little ones, would you?\u201d<\/p>\n

Everything inside me suddenly became still.<\/p>\n

Twelve years of swallowing my feelings.<\/p>\n

Twelve years of canceled plans, hijacked holidays, and birthdays that never belonged to me.<\/p>\n

Twelve years of David always taking the easiest route \u2014 one that inevitably walked straight over me.<\/p>\n

\u201cDavid,\u201d I pleaded one last time. \u201cPlease\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

He finally met my eyes.<\/p>\n

And what I found there stunned me.<\/p>\n

There wasn\u2019t a trace of guilt.<\/p>\n

Only a weary, cowardly hope that I\u2019d make this easier for him.<\/p>\n

As though twelve years of coming second could somehow be measured in square footage.<\/p>\n

Behind the desk, the hotel clerk awkwardly pretended to keep typing.<\/p>\n

I could have argued.<\/p>\n

I could\u2019ve even grabbed a notebook and worked out the room assignments right there at check-in.<\/p>\n

But I\u2019d already lost.<\/p>\n

A strange calm settled over me.<\/p>\n

That was the exact moment I decided I was done.<\/p>\n

\u201cOkay,\u201d I said softly.<\/p>\n

Beatrice narrowed her eyes.<\/p>\n

She\u2019d expected a fight.<\/p>\n

A fight would\u2019ve let her play the victim.<\/p>\n

\u201cOkay?\u201d she echoed.<\/p>\n

\u201cOkay,\u201d I repeated. \u201cGive me the keycard for the ground-floor room.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cReally?\u201d David extended the second keycard toward me. \u201cYou\u2019re not upset?\u201d<\/p>\n

I smiled at him.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy would I be upset, David? You\u2019ve made your priorities very clear.\u201d<\/p>\n

I accepted the keycard, gathered my three exhausted children, and headed toward the elevators.<\/p>\n

I never looked back.<\/p>\n

I already had a plan.<\/p>\n

Behind me, I heard Beatrice let out a satisfied little hum.<\/p>\n

David exhaled with relief.<\/p>\n

They thought it was over.<\/p>\n

Perfect.<\/p>\n

Inside the elevator, my oldest looked up nervously.<\/p>\n

Six exhausting weeks of overtime, only for David to spend part of it on a luxury suite I wasn\u2019t even staying in.<\/p>\n

Then I noticed another charge on David\u2019s personal credit card.<\/p>\n

The one he\u2019d insisted was almost paid off.<\/p>\n

A pending charge for the ground-floor family room.<\/p>\n

Just under two hundred dollars.<\/p>\n

My hands began trembling.<\/p>\n

He hadn\u2019t treated me to anything.<\/p>\n

He\u2019d used my money to spoil his mother while sticking me and our children in the cheapest room at the resort.<\/p>\n

For a second I wanted to march upstairs.<\/p>\n

I wanted to shove the booking confirmation in David\u2019s face and demand answers.<\/p>\n

But then I imagined Beatrice watching me explode.<\/p>\n

That smug smile she always wore whenever I became the unreasonable one flashed through my mind.<\/p>\n

No.<\/p>\n

This time she wasn\u2019t getting the performance she wanted.<\/p>\n

Instead, a cold realization settled over me.<\/p>\n

I smiled.<\/p>\n

Then I made my next move.<\/p>\n

I picked up the hotel phone and called the bank.<\/p>\n

\u201cHi,\u201d I said calmly. \u201cI\u2019d like to remove my debit card as the payment guarantee for a hotel reservation.\u201d<\/p>\n

The representative confirmed my identity.<\/p>\n

\u201cI also want to transfer some money into my personal account immediately,\u201d I continued.<\/p>\n

My work bonus was going somewhere David couldn\u2019t touch it.<\/p>\n

Within minutes, the transfer was complete.<\/p>\n

I closed my laptop.<\/p>\n

Now it was time for Beatrice and David to learn a lesson.<\/p>\n

\u201cKids,\u201d I said with a smile. \u201cPut your shoes back on.\u201d<\/p>\n

My oldest frowned.<\/p>\n
