\u201cNo. I\u2019m documenting you.\u201d<\/p>\n

My husband stepped beside me. \u201cSir, the gate is that way.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dad\u2019s smile returned, but weaker this time. \u201cSo this is the man who thinks he can replace me?\u201d<\/p>\n

My husband\u2019s voice remained calm. \u201cYou left the position vacant.\u201d<\/p>\n

Several adults on the patio had fallen silent. My aunt stood near the cake table, her face pale with anger. She was the one who had collected me from that porch twenty years earlier. She was the one who bought my school shoes, signed my permission slips, and held me when I asked why my father did not want me.<\/p>\n

She walked forward slowly.<\/p>\n

\u201cRobert,\u201d she said, \u201cleave.\u201d<\/p>\n

He sneered. \u201cOf course you\u2019re here. You always filled her head with lies.\u201d<\/p>\n

My aunt\u2019s hands trembled, but her voice held steady. \u201cI filled her fridge. You filled trash bags.\u201d<\/p>\n

That silenced even him.<\/p>\n

Then I took out my phone and opened the folder I had prepared years earlier, back when my therapist told me healing did not mean pretending the past had no paperwork.<\/p>\n

Photos of the trash bags.<\/p>\n

Messages from neighbors.<\/p>\n

A copy of the child abandonment report my aunt filed.<\/p>\n

A letter from his own attorney, sent when I was sixteen, refusing support because he claimed I had \u201cvoluntarily left home.\u201d<\/p>\n

I turned the screen toward him.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou want to sue me?\u201d I said. \u201cStart with this.\u201d<\/p>\n

His face lost its color.<\/p>\n

Then Noah began crying behind me, overwhelmed by the shouting.<\/p>\n

That was the only sound that mattered.<\/p>\n

My father looked past me again. \u201cHe deserves to know his grandfather.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d I said. \u201cHe deserves peace.\u201d<\/p>\n

My attorney, who happened to be one of the parents at the party, stepped forward with her phone already in her hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cMr. Ellis,\u201d she said, \u201cI suggest you leave before this becomes a police matter.\u201d<\/p>\n

He stared at her.<\/p>\n
