Every family has that one person who treats your home like an all-inclusive resort but never thinks to bring so much as a bag of chips. In my case, that person was my mother-in-law, Juliette. She never arrived alone, either. She came with her daughters, their children, their opinions, and absolutely nothing to contribute.<\/p>\n

So when they showed up empty-handed yet again for the Fourth of July, I decided it was finally time to serve them a meal they would never forget.<\/p>\n

My name is Annie, and after years of hosting family cookouts, I had learned one painful truth: throwing a barbecue for my husband\u2019s relatives felt less like welcoming guests and more like operating a restaurant where nobody paid, nobody tipped, and somehow everyone still left believing I owed them more.<\/p>\n

I had been married to Bryan for seven years. We had two sweet kids, a cozy home in the countryside, and a life that used to feel calm and manageable. Then Juliette made our house her favorite holiday destination.<\/p>\n

She had the confidence of a queen, the manners of a critic, and the self-awareness of a paper plate in a windstorm.<\/p>\n

Whenever she visited, she brought her two daughters, Sarah and Kate, plus six grandchildren who seemed to multiply the second they crossed the threshold. They arrived like a traveling carnival of noise, demands, sticky fingers, and empty hands.<\/p>\n

A few weeks before the Fourth, she called to announce their Memorial Day visit as if she were doing me a favor.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnnie, darling, we\u2019re coming for Memorial Day,\u201d she said brightly. \u201cThe kids just love your ribs.\u201d<\/p>\n

Of course they loved them. I bought the ribs. I marinated them. I cooked them. I served them. Then Juliette sat in my patio chair and told me what I had done wrong.<\/p>\n

That Memorial Day had been another exhausting performance.<\/p>\n

Juliette walked in and immediately started rearranging my living room like she had been hired to redesign the place.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis couch would look much better facing the window,\u201d she said, already shoving it across the floor.<\/p>\n

\u201cI actually like it where it is,\u201d I replied.<\/p>\n

\u201cNonsense, dear. I have a good eye for these things.\u201d<\/p>\n

She moved my sectional until my coffee table nearly blocked the hallway, then stood back like she had just created a masterpiece.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd those roses outside,\u201d she added. \u201cYou really should trim them. They\u2019re looking a little wild.\u201d<\/p>\n

Those roses were my pride. I had spent three years growing them. But to Juliette, anything that was not under her control needed correcting.<\/p>\n

While she criticized my furniture and flowers, Sarah and Kate took over the kitchen island. They spread snacks, bags, cups, wipes, and toys across my clean counters without asking. Their children ran through the house like a storm with shoes on.<\/p>\n

Eight-year-old Tyler dripped popsicle juice onto my white carpet and demanded to know where the bathroom was.<\/p>\n

\u201cDown the hall, sweetie,\u201d I said, already reaching for the carpet cleaner.<\/p>\n

His sister Madison looked into my pantry and whined, \u201cWhy don\u2019t you have good snacks?\u201d<\/p>\n

The \u201cgood snacks,\u201d of course, were the ones I always bought. The ones they never brought. The ones that magically came out of my grocery budget every single holiday.<\/p>\n

Outside, Juliette called from the patio, \u201cAnnie, the meat looks a little dry. Are you sure you\u2019re not overcooking it?\u201d<\/p>\n

I smiled because screaming was not polite.<\/p>\n

By the time they finally left that night, they had eaten through nearly two hundred dollars\u2019 worth of food, left trash in my yard, sticky fingerprints on my doors, and juice boxes behind the couch.<\/p>\n

Bryan helped me load the dishwasher while I picked popsicle sticks out of my flower beds.<\/p>\n

\u201cBee,\u201d I said, using his nickname, \u201cyour mother moved the couch again.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s just trying to help, Nini,\u201d he said gently, though I could see the guilt in his face.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe also ate two hundred dollars\u2019 worth of groceries. Again.\u201d<\/p>\n

He sighed. \u201cI know. I\u2019ll talk to her.\u201d<\/p>\n

But we both knew he probably would not. Bryan loved me, but he had spent his whole life trying not to upset his mother. And I had spent years trying to be patient.<\/p>\n

The next morning, Juliette called.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnnie, darling! We had such a wonderful time yesterday. The children are still talking about those ribs.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m glad they liked them,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

\u201cAnd we\u2019re all coming for the Fourth of July,\u201d she continued. \u201cThe whole gang. We\u2019ll make a weekend of it. Won\u2019t that be fun?\u201d<\/p>\n

My hand tightened around the phone.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe whole weekend?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes! We\u2019ll arrive Friday afternoon. Make sure you get plenty of those little sausages. The kids devour them. And Sarah has not stopped talking about your potato salad. Don\u2019t forget the ribs, dear. Juicy, like last time.\u201d<\/p>\n
