I slid a folder across the table.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d I said. \u201cI did it because I thought that was what family meant. But then I was told I was the one being carried.\u201d<\/p>\n

My mother said I was taking things out of context.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is no context,\u201d I replied, \u201cwhere that sentence means anything else.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then I showed them the transfer agreement.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe cabin is mine now. Fully. Legally. Without conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n

My mother stared at the page like it had betrayed her.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo you\u2019re punishing us,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
