Angela Moore did not hurry me.<\/p>\n

She asked one question at a time, recording everything in a small blue notebook while Detective Nolan stood near the foot of the bed.<\/p>\n

I expected them to interrupt, question me, or tell me every family had difficulties.<\/p>\n

That was what school counselors had said when I tried to suggest that something was wrong.<\/p>\n

But Angela only listened.<\/p>\n

I told her everything.<\/p>\n

How the trouble with Brittany had started when I was twelve.<\/p>\n

At first, it was shoving me aside, locking me outside on the back porch in winter, hiding my homework, and finding new ways to make me feel afraid inside my own home.<\/p>\n

My parents brushed it off as sibling rivalry.<\/p>\n

As the years went on, the situation grew worse.<\/p>\n

Arguments often ended with me being hurt, while everyone insisted I had somehow caused it.<\/p>\n

Mom always chose the explanation that was easiest to believe.<\/p>\n

Dad did more than believe it.<\/p>\n

He protected Brittany.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur neighbor\u2019s dog. Two years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n

Detective Nolan looked at me.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBrittany said it wouldn\u2019t stop barking. After it disappeared, everyone was told it must have wandered off.\u201d<\/p>\n

Angela became very still.<\/p>\n

\u201cDid your parents know?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey knew,\u201d I whispered.<\/p>\n

\u201cDad asked me to repeat the same story.\u201d<\/p>\n

The curtain suddenly slid open.<\/p>\n

Dad stood there with a security officer only a few steps behind him.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis interview is over,\u201d he snapped.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s medicated. She\u2019s confused.\u201d<\/p>\n

Detective Nolan moved between us.<\/p>\n

\u201cMr. Whitaker, leave the room.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m her father.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd right now you\u2019re interfering with an investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mom was crying in the hallway.<\/p>\n

Brittany kept saying I was destroying her life.<\/p>\n

But something had already shifted.<\/p>\n

The truth was no longer locked inside our house.<\/p>\n

It was written in Angela\u2019s notebook.<\/p>\n

It was visible in the medical findings.<\/p>\n

It was recorded in the doctor\u2019s report.<\/p>\n

That evening, CPS placed me in emergency protective custody while the investigation continued.<\/p>\n

I was not allowed to go back home.<\/p>\n
