Those were the words that made me understand my marriage had ended long before the accident.<\/p>\n

The crash happened on a Friday afternoon while we were driving back from lunch in Las Lomas. Alejandro was behind the wheel. Mariana, his lifelong friend, sat beside him, complaining that she felt faint. I was in the back seat, still swallowing the argument we had just had.<\/p>\n

Then a truck stopped suddenly.<\/p>\n

Everything happened at once.<\/p>\n

At the hospital, Mariana and I were rushed in almost together. She had minor injuries. I was in serious condition, barely able to stay conscious.<\/p>\n

A nurse shouted that my blood pressure was dropping and that I needed surgery immediately.<\/p>\n

But Alejandro looked at the doctor and said, \u201cTake Mariana first. She\u2019s fragile. She has heart problems.\u201d<\/p>\n

Alejandro glanced at me for one second. There was no fear in his eyes. Only irritation.<\/p>\n

Something inside me went cold.<\/p>\n

For three years, I had been expected to understand why Mariana always came first. If she cried, Alejandro ran. If she felt lonely, he left me behind. If she accused me of being jealous, I was the one forced to apologize.<\/p>\n

His mother always said, \u201cA Montes wife must be mature. Mariana is like family.\u201d<\/p>\n

But lying there, needing emergency surgery, I finally understood what \u201cmature\u201d meant.<\/p>\n

It meant invisible.<\/p>\n

The doctor leaned over me and said they needed my signature. My right hand could not move, so I signed with my left.<\/p>\n

If my husband would not choose my life, I would.<\/p>\n

Before they took me into surgery, I pulled off my wedding ring and dropped it onto the tray.<\/p>\n

That was when I called Clara, my mother\u2019s old friend in Houston.<\/p>\n

\u201cClara,\u201d I whispered, \u201cI want to leave.\u201d<\/p>\n

She did not ask questions.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll get you out today.\u201d<\/p>\n

That afternoon, I signed the transfer papers alone.<\/p>\n

Before they took me away, Alejandro\u2019s assistant arrived.<\/p>\n

\u201cMrs. Montes, Mr. Alejandro sent me to see if you were awake.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSofia Rivera,\u201d I corrected. \u201cTell him I\u2019m done waiting.\u201d<\/p>\n

I handed him my ring.<\/p>\n

\u201cGive this back.\u201d<\/p>\n

As the stretcher moved past Mariana\u2019s room, I heard her ask, \u201cAle, is Sofia angry with me?\u201d<\/p>\n

Alejandro answered gently, \u201cShe understands. Rest.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then my phone buzzed.<\/p>\n

It was him.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re awake. Go see Mariana. She won\u2019t stop crying.\u201d<\/p>\n

I blocked his number.<\/p>\n
