For half a second, my mind refused to accept what my eyes had just witnessed. Emily had been standing near the hotel pool in her yellow church dress, white cardigan, and tiny silver shoes, holding the plastic cup of lemonade I had just bought for her. My sister Vanessa leaned in close, smiling the way she always did when she wanted a reaction.<\/p>\n

Then Vanessa shoved her.<\/p>\n

Emily vanished beneath the blue water fully dressed.<\/p>\n

People gasped. Someone yelled. My body moved before my thoughts caught up. I dropped my purse, kicked off one heel, and rushed toward the pool.<\/p>\n

A hand clamped around the back of my neck.<\/p>\n

My father\u2019s fingers dug into my skin like steel. He jerked me backward so hard my knees slammed against the concrete.<\/p>\n

\u201cDad, let go!\u201d I screamed.<\/p>\n

He tightened his grip.<\/p>\n

Vanessa stood at the edge, arms crossed, watching bubbles rise from where Emily had disappeared.<\/p>\n

My mother, Patricia, covered her mouth, but she did not move. My brother Mark looked away, ashamed, as if this were only another \u201cfamily moment\u201d I was making dramatic.<\/p>\n

I clawed at my father\u2019s wrist.<\/p>\n

Emily\u2019s hand broke the surface once.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe can\u2019t swim!\u201d I screamed. \u201cShe\u2019s five!\u201d<\/p>\n

My father leaned close to my ear. His breath smelled of whiskey and mint gum.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf she survives, she survives,\u201d he said. \u201cIf she can\u2019t handle water, she doesn\u2019t deserve life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Something inside me went silent.<\/p>\n

Not calm. Not peace. Something colder.<\/p>\n

I slammed my elbow backward into his ribs. He grunted, and his grip loosened just enough. I ripped myself free and threw my body into the pool.<\/p>\n

The water froze around my clothes. I forced my eyes open through the sting of chlorine and saw Emily sinking, her dress swelling around her, her little shoes dragging her down. I grabbed her beneath the arms and kicked upward with everything I had.<\/p>\n

By the time I pulled her onto the pool deck, her lips were blue.<\/p>\n

\u201cCall 911<\/span>!\u201d I screamed.<\/p>\n

A stranger began CPR before I could. A woman in a red swimsuit held my shoulders while I sobbed and counted breaths that were not mine. Vanessa muttered, \u201cIt was a joke.\u201d<\/p>\n

My father said, louder, \u201cChildren need discipline.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sirens arrived. Paramedics took over. Emily coughed water onto the concrete, and I nearly collapsed.<\/p>\n

At the hospital, the police asked me what had happened.<\/p>\n

I looked through the glass at my daughter, wrapped in warm blankets, shaking but alive.<\/p>\n

Then I looked at my family.<\/p>\n

They had never believed I would choose my child over them.<\/p>\n

They had never believed I would take everything they valued.<\/p>\n
