She bought a bouquet of sunflowers, styled her hair the way Andrew Carter always loved, and arrived at Reagan National Airport long before his flight landed. Andrew had left as a military doctor on an overseas mission, promising that when he returned, they would finally get married.<\/p>\n

\u201cWait for me, Em. When I come home, we\u2019ll start our real life together.\u201d<\/p>\n

Emily believed every word.<\/p>\n

While Andrew was away, she cared for his aging parents, quietly rescued Carter Development from one financial disaster after another, and endured endless insults from Andrew\u2019s mother, Mrs. Harrington.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re too controlling,\u201d the older woman often sneered. \u201cMen don\u2019t marry women who always have to be the smartest person in the room.\u201d<\/p>\n
