Then one Friday night, headlights swept across my windshield.<\/p>\n

It was just after 2 a.m. when a silver SUV pulled into the parking lot beside me. For a second, I thought it might be security. Then someone knocked three times on the window.<\/p>\n

I nodded, crying too hard to speak.<\/p>\n

I held my pillow tighter.<\/p>\n

\u201cStay here for a few minutes, sweetheart,\u201d she said. \u201cI need to go home quickly. I\u2019ll be back.\u201d<\/p>\n

I did not understand, but I nodded.<\/p>\n

Fifteen minutes later, Dana returned. She parked, opened the back of her SUV, and pulled out a long package wrapped in brown paper.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is that?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cA parenting lesson,\u201d she said. \u201cLeft over from our lake trip. Come with me. You don\u2019t want to miss this.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDana, it\u2019s the middle of the night.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cExactly.\u201d<\/p>\n

She helped me out of the car, and my back cracked as I stood. Her face tightened in sympathy.<\/p>\n

\u201cSweetheart,\u201d she said quietly, \u201cyou should not be doing this. Not eight months pregnant. Not ever. Not even for one night.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked down, ashamed.<\/p>\n

We climbed the stairs together. Dana carried the package like a weapon. I held the railing with one hand and my belly with the other.<\/p>\n

Halfway up, I whispered,<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s going to be furious.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019ll blame me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dana turned and looked me straight in the eye.<\/p>\n

\u201cEmma, listen to me. You have done nothing wrong. You are growing a human being in a body that hurts, and he put you in a car in August heat. Tonight, you stand behind me. I talk. Then you sleep in your own bed. Understood?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, ma\u2019am.\u201d<\/p>\n

When we reached the apartment, Dana knocked three sharp times.<\/p>\n

Ryan opened the door with a sleepy expression, but his face changed when he saw his mother beside me.<\/p>\n

Dana held out the package.<\/p>\n

\u201cA little surprise.\u201d<\/p>\n

He carried it inside and tore off the paper. Inside was a folded camping cot.<\/p>\n

Ryan stared.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom, what the hell?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cStarting tonight,\u201d Dana said calmly, \u201cyou sleep on this in the hallway. Emma sleeps in the bed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can\u2019t do this!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, I can.\u201d Dana\u2019s voice stayed even. \u201cTell your wife who really pays the rent, Ryan.\u201d<\/p>\n

His face went pale.<\/p>\n
