The signature resembled mine, but the date came from a weekend I had spent in Boston. The notary seal belonged to Nevada. The payment listed\u2014two hundred thousand dollars\u2014had never reached any account I owned.<\/p>\n

I stopped fighting.<\/p>\n

Adrian mistook my silence for surrender. \u201cSecurity will escort you out after discharge. The apartment lease is canceled. Your cards are already frozen.\u201d<\/p>\n

Celeste smiled. \u201cNo husband. No child. No money.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked at Lily\u2019s red, furious little face and forced myself to breathe.<\/p>\n

\u201cMay I hold her once more?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

Vanessa laughed. \u201cAbsolutely not.\u201d<\/p>\n

So I reached toward the bedside phone instead.<\/p>\n

Adrian slapped my hand away. \u201cWho are you calling?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMy father.\u201d<\/p>\n

He smirked. In three years of marriage, I had only told him that things between my father and me were complicated.<\/p>\n

Adrian had never asked why.<\/p>\n

I looked at the nurse. \u201cPlease call the number listed under my emergency contact. Tell him Claire Whitmore needs him now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Celeste\u2019s smile disappeared.<\/p>\n
