The front door opened.<\/p>\n

Captain Ruiz stepped inside with two military police investigators. Behind them came Detective Harris, a child protective services worker, my attorney Naomi Price, and two paramedics carrying emergency bags.<\/p>\n

Eleanor\u2019s face went pale.<\/p>\n

Audrey recovered first.<\/p>\n

\u201cLucas, this is ridiculous. You brought police into family matters?\u201d<\/p>\n

Detective Harris looked at Sophia\u2019s injuries.<\/p>\n

\u201cAssault and unlawful imprisonment are not family matters.\u201d<\/p>\n

The paramedics rushed to Leo. His temperature was dangerously high, and he was badly dehydrated. One paramedic called for an ambulance while the other checked his oxygen.<\/p>\n

Sophia clutched my sleeve.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease don\u2019t leave me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not going anywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n

Eleanor pointed at her.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s manipulating you. She refused to cook, clean, or help around the house. We were teaching her responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n

Naomi placed a thick folder on the dining table.<\/p>\n

\u201cBy hurting her?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo one hurt anyone,\u201d Audrey snapped.<\/p>\n

Captain Ruiz held up a sealed evidence bag.<\/p>\n

Inside was the nursery camera\u2019s memory card.<\/p>\n

Audrey\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n

I had installed that camera before leaving because Leo was due while I was deployed. It uploaded footage automatically to an encrypted account.<\/p>\n

Eleanor had unplugged the router whenever she wanted privacy, not realizing the camera stored recordings locally and uploaded them later when the internet came back.<\/p>\n

Ruiz pressed play on a tablet.<\/p>\n

The first clip showed Eleanor dragging Sophia by the hair because dinner was late.<\/p>\n

The second showed Audrey hitting her while Leo cried in the crib.<\/p>\n

Another showed them locking the doors and taking Sophia\u2019s phone.<\/p>\n

Then a clip showed Eleanor pouring Leo\u2019s medicine down the sink.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was giving him too much,\u201d Eleanor said quickly.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

The caseworker checked a dosage log Sophia had hidden inside a diaper box.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d she said coldly. \u201cShe was following the doctor\u2019s instructions.\u201d<\/p>\n

I turned to Sophia.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow long has this been happening?\u201d<\/p>\n

Her eyes filled.<\/p>\n

\u201cSince two weeks after you left. They said you gave them authority over me. They showed me messages from your number.\u201d<\/p>\n

Naomi laid several printed records beside the tablet.<\/p>\n

\u201cThose messages came from a cloned account created on Audrey\u2019s laptop.\u201d<\/p>\n

Audrey backed away.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can\u2019t prove I wrote them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Naomi didn\u2019t blink.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe can. Device history, network records, and cloud backups all point to you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Eleanor tried to regain control.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven if things got heated, Lucas will not destroy his own family.\u201d<\/p>\n

I opened the folder.<\/p>\n

Inside were copies of my grandfather\u2019s trust documents, Eleanor\u2019s temporary occupancy agreement, and bank records showing that she and Audrey had moved thirty-eight thousand dollars from the household emergency account using Sophia\u2019s forged signature.<\/p>\n

Eleanor stared at the papers.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is this?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe proof that you chose the wrong person to underestimate.\u201d<\/p>\n

I pushed the trust deed toward her.<\/p>\n

Her eyes dropped to the owner\u2019s name.<\/p>\n

Mine.<\/p>\n

For the first time that night, the arrogance left her face.<\/p>\n

Audrey lunged toward the folder, but Detective Harris caught her wrist before she could grab it. Her wineglass fell and shattered on the floor.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou forged my wife\u2019s name,\u201d I said. \u201cYou stole deployment benefits. You sold her jewelry, canceled medical appointments, and told the neighbors she was unstable.\u201d<\/p>\n

Eleanor lifted her chin.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe deserved something after everything we did for you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou didn\u2019t raise me,\u201d I said. \u201cGrandpa did, after you disappeared for five years. And his instructions were very clear: protect the family that protects you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sophia started crying.<\/p>\n

Eleanor did not<\/p>\n
