She looked at me in surprise.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow do you know my name?\u201d<\/p>\n

He smiled gently.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour mom mentioned it when you checked in.\u201d<\/p>\n

I had.<\/p>\n

While apologizing because I thought I was taking too long.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have something that really does belong to you,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He handed her a smaller blue box tied with silver ribbon.<\/p>\n

Mia opened it slowly.<\/p>\n

Inside was a stuffed sea turtle wearing tiny sunglasses, two dessert vouchers, a photo session card, and a laminated badge that read: Pool Hero.<\/p>\n

My throat tightened.<\/p>\n

The manager stood beside me.<\/p>\n

For a moment, I could not speak.<\/p>\n

Because he was right.<\/p>\n

I had apologized my way through survival.<\/p>\n

To teachers.<\/p>\n

To strangers in grocery store lines when Mia walked slowly.<\/p>\n

Fresh clean towels were brought over.<\/p>\n

Mia held the stuffed turtle against her chest like it was a medal.<\/p>\n

Within minutes, they were comparing scars like secret badges.<\/p>\n

I leaned back in my chair, the sun warm on my arms, the blue box tucked safely beneath the table.<\/p>\n

That morning, I thought I had to fight the whole world just to give Mia one ordinary day.<\/p>\n

By evening, I understood something better.<\/p>\n

There were still people quietly making room for us.<\/p>\n
