Her suitcase stood near the front door, glossy black, zipped so tightly it looked ready to split. My father kept checking his watch. My older sister, Vanessa, scrolled through her phone, sunglasses already pushed into her hair like she was posing for a travel ad.<\/p>\n

I did not argue. I went upstairs, packed two changes of clothes, my laptop, my documents, and the emergency cash hidden inside an old poetry book. While they loaded the car, I slipped out through the back door and ordered a rideshare to my friend Hannah\u2019s apartment across town.<\/p>\n

No one noticed until hours later.<\/p>\n

At 7:42 that evening, my phone started vibrating nonstop.<\/p>\n

Mom: Where are you?<\/p>\n

Dad: This is childish.<\/p>\n

Vanessa: You better be home when we get back.<\/p>\n

I turned the phone face down.<\/p>\n

For the first time in years, I slept without listening for someone yelling my name from downstairs.<\/p>\n

The next morning, an unknown number called.<\/p>\n

\u201cGood morning, ma\u2019am,\u201d a man said carefully. \u201cI\u2019m Officer Daniel Ruiz with the Westbrook Police Department. Are you Emily Carter?\u201d<\/p>\n

My stomach tightened. \u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m calling about your parents\u2019 residence on Hawthorne Lane. Someone has reported a break-in.\u201d<\/p>\n

I sat upright. \u201cA break-in?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, ma\u2019am. A neighbor called after seeing the front door open. We found signs of forced entry. We also found a dog inside, alive but distressed. No people were present.\u201d<\/p>\n

My mouth went dry. \u201cMy family is away.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s what we\u2019re trying to confirm. Are you able to come to the property?\u201d<\/p>\n

I almost said no.<\/p>\n

Then he added, \u201cThere\u2019s something else. The house wasn\u2019t just burglarized. It appears someone had been watching it. There were notes left inside. One of them mentioned your name.\u201d<\/p>\n

My name.<\/p>\n

Hannah stared at me from the kitchen, frozen with a coffee mug in her hand.<\/p>\n

I put the phone on speaker. \u201cWhat did the note say?\u201d<\/p>\n

Officer Ruiz hesitated. \u201cIt said, \u2018Emily was supposed to be here.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
