For one whole year, I kept my daughter\u2019s room exactly the way she had left it.<\/p>\n
I dusted her shelves, washed the blankets she never came home to use, and called the detective so many times he knew my voice before I said my name. I tried not to hate the lake. I tried not to hate the water. I tried not to hate the Saturday morning that had taken Sophie away from me.<\/p>\n
And through all of it, my husband, Mark, grieved beside me.<\/p>\n
At least, that was what I believed.<\/p>\n
He cried at the right moments. He avoided the lake. He packed away Sophie\u2019s fishing vest like a broken father who could not bear the sight of it. But there was one thing he never let go of.<\/p>\n

He guarded it like it held the last piece of our daughter.<\/p>\n

Sophie was twelve when she became obsessed with fishing. She was all long limbs, scraped knees, and messy ponytails, the kind of child who could sit by the water for hours without getting bored.<\/p>\n
Every Saturday before sunrise, Mark took her out. First, they bought hot chocolate and cinnamon rolls. Then they drove to the lake where Mark\u2019s father had taught him to fish.<\/p>\n

Denise watched me after they left.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou know Sophie loves you too,\u201d she said gently.<\/p>\n
\u201cI know,\u201d I said, staring into my coffee. \u201cI just wish loving me came with secret jokes and cinnamon rolls.\u201d<\/p>\n
Denise reached across the table and squeezed my arm. \u201cDani, you\u2019re her mother. That means more than you know.\u201d<\/p>\n
By noon, Mark came home alone.<\/p>\n
The front door slammed so hard a frame fell off the hallway table.<\/p>\n
\u201cDani!\u201d<\/p>\n
I dropped the laundry basket and ran.<\/p>\n
Mark stood in the entryway soaked from head to toe, his face drained of color. His hands shook so badly his keys slipped from his fingers and hit the floor.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat happened?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n
He opened his mouth, but no sound came out.<\/p>\n
\u201cMark.\u201d<\/p>\n
His voice cracked. \u201cSophie\u2019s gone.\u201d<\/p>\n
My whole body stopped. \u201cWhat do you mean, gone?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cShe slipped near the rocks,\u201d he gasped. \u201cI turned away for one second to untangle the line, and when I looked back, she was gone.\u201d<\/p>\n
I grabbed his shirt. \u201cWhere is she?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI looked everywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWhere is my daughter?\u201d<\/p>\n
He fell to his knees. \u201cThe current took her.\u201d<\/p>\n
The police searched until midnight. Divers went into the water. Dogs followed the shoreline. Volunteers called Sophie\u2019s name until their voices gave out.<\/p>\n
A detective stood with me near the bank and said carefully, \u201cThe current is very strong here.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cBut you haven\u2019t found her,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

Mark stared at the water like it had swallowed his soul.<\/p>\n

Denise made phone calls when I could not speak. She sat beside me while I circled areas on maps and wrote down every possible lead.<\/p>\n

Eventually, the police called it an accident.<\/p>\n
Wet rocks. Fast water. A missing child.<\/p>\n

He sold the boat, stopped going near the lake, and packed away Sophie\u2019s fishing things. But he kept the red tackle box.<\/p>\n
