I kept a binder filled with everything connected to Sophie\u2019s case.<\/p>\n

Maps. Names. Dates. Police notes. Volunteer lists. Every call I made and every answer I received.<\/p>\n

Mark hated that binder.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re only hurting yourself,\u201d he told me one night.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s my daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s gone, Dani.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked up at him slowly. \u201cDon\u2019t say that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have to let her rest.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe doesn\u2019t get to rest until I know where she is.\u201d<\/p>\n

He turned away.<\/p>\n

I should have understood then.<\/p>\n

Exactly one year after Sophie disappeared, I woke up with anger burning through me.<\/p>\n

The house felt frozen in time. Sophie\u2019s cereal box was still in the pantry. Her shoes still sat by the back door. Mark\u2019s shirts still hung in the closet like life had not split open.<\/p>\n

And that red tackle box sat on the floor like a shrine.<\/p>\n

Denise called while I was pulling donation bags from the hall closet.<\/p>\n

\u201cWant me to come over?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I don\u2019t do something today, I\u2019m going to scream.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her voice softened. \u201cCall me before you break.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI think I already have.\u201d<\/p>\n

I started sorting Mark\u2019s shirts too quickly because stopping meant thinking.<\/p>\n

Then my elbow hit the tackle box.<\/p>\n

It fell to the floor. The lid popped open, and hooks, lures, and fishing line spilled across the carpet.<\/p>\n

The bottom panel snapped loose.<\/p>\n

Something wrapped in dirty white fabric slid out.<\/p>\n

For years, Mark had joked about the false bottom.<\/p>\n

\u201cExtra-special bait,\u201d he used to say.<\/p>\n

My fingers shook as I opened the cloth.<\/p>\n

Inside, I found Sophie\u2019s pink fishing scarf.<\/p>\n

A small wooden sign.<\/p>\n

A medical wristband.<\/p>\n

And a folded receipt.<\/p>\n

When I saw Sophie\u2019s name printed on the wristband, I stopped breathing.<\/p>\n

The receipt was from a pediatric recovery center in another state.<\/p>\n

The intake date was July 18.<\/p>\n

Three days after Sophie disappeared.<\/p>\n

Then I looked at the little wooden sign.<\/p>\n

The letters were uneven, painted by a child\u2019s careful hand.<\/p>\n

Mom\u2019s Lake House.<\/p>\n

My knees almost gave out.<\/p>\n

I grabbed my phone.<\/p>\n

\u201c911, what is your emergency?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMy daughter disappeared a year ago,\u201d I said, barely recognizing my own voice. \u201cI just found proof she was alive three days later.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIs your husband home?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you safe?\u201d<\/p>\n

I stared at Sophie\u2019s scarf in my hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d I whispered. \u201cNot in any way that matters.\u201d<\/p>\n

After I hung up, I called Denise.<\/p>\n

\u201cDani?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCome over.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMark lied,\u201d I said. \u201cSophie might still be alive.\u201d<\/p>\n

The police arrived first. Denise came in right behind them.<\/p>\n

An officer crouched beside the tackle box.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis was hidden under the panel?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd your husband kept this box for the last year?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes. I never looked inside until now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Before he could ask another question, the front door opened.<\/p>\n

Mark stepped in carrying his lunch bag.<\/p>\n

He saw the officers.<\/p>\n

Then he saw the tackle box.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d he whispered.<\/p>\n

That one word told me everything.<\/p>\n

I stepped toward him. \u201cWhat is that recovery center?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDani, please.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is it?\u201d<\/p>\n

His face folded. \u201cI was going to tell you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI needed her to get better first.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cold spread through my body.<\/p>\n

\u201cWas she alive while I stood at that lake screaming her name?\u201d I asked. \u201cAnswer me.\u201d<\/p>\n

He looked down.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

I had to put my hand against the wall to stay upright.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou didn\u2019t lose our daughter,\u201d I said. \u201cYou took her from me.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Mark began to cry, but this time, his tears meant nothing.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was hurt,\u201d he said. \u201cShe fell near the cabin trail.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat cabin?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMy dad\u2019s old fishing cabin. Sophie and I were fixing it up for you.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked at the wooden sign on the floor.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom\u2019s Lake House.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat happened?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe path was wet. She went back for the sign and slipped. I panicked. I drove her to urgent care.\u201d<\/p>\n

One officer stepped closer. \u201cHow did a medical center keep her mother away?\u201d<\/p>\n

Mark lowered his eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cI signed the intake forms.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re her father,\u201d I said. \u201cThat explains one day. Not a year.\u201d<\/p>\n

He swallowed hard. \u201cI told them you knew.\u201d<\/p>\n

My stomach turned.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI said you were unavailable. I told them you were mentally unstable from grief and that a therapist recommended limited contact. Calls had to go through me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t even have a therapist.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n

I gripped the hallway table.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou erased me from my own child\u2019s life.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI paid privately,\u201d he said. \u201cNo insurance. No statements mailed home. I didn\u2019t want questions.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou didn\u2019t want questions,\u201d I said. \u201cYou wanted control.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo. I love her.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can love someone and still do something unforgivable.\u201d<\/p>\n

The detective arrived soon after. He questioned Mark about dates, payments, records, and the recovery center.<\/p>\n

Then he turned to me.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe contacted the facility. Sophie is currently listed as a patient.\u201d<\/p>\n

My voice broke. \u201cShe\u2019s alive?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

My daughter was alive.<\/p>\n

For a moment, the world tilted.<\/p>\n

Then I locked my knees and held out my hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cGive me the address.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMa\u2019am, we need to coordinate\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen coordinate fast,\u201d I said. \u201cI am done being the last person told where my child is.\u201d<\/p>\n

I turned toward the door.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m going to her.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mark stood. \u201cI\u2019m coming.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked at him.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo. You\u2019re not.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDani\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou made every decision for a year. Now I make this one.\u201d<\/p>\n

Denise picked up my purse and keys.<\/p>\n
