At the recovery center, a counselor met me in a small office.<\/p>\n

\u201cDetective Harris called ahead,\u201d she said. \u201cWe\u2019re reviewing Sophie\u2019s file now.\u201d<\/p>\n

I gripped the back of a chair. \u201cI\u2019m not here to give a statement. I\u2019m here for my daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her expression softened. \u201cSophie is here. Physically, she is stable. She still has anxiety and memory gaps connected to the accident.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDoes she know I\u2019m here?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNot yet. We wanted to prepare her first.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

The counselor blinked. \u201cNo?\u201d<\/p>\n

She led us down a quiet blue hallway.<\/p>\n

Every step felt too loud.<\/p>\n

I looked through the small window in the door.<\/p>\n

A girl sat at a table with a sketchbook in front of her. Her hair was longer. Her face was thinner.<\/p>\n

Her chin trembled. \u201cDaddy said you needed time.\u201d<\/p>\n

I dropped to my knees.<\/p>\n

\u201cI asked for you,\u201d she cried. \u201cDaddy said not yet.\u201d<\/p>\n

I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause grown-ups can make terrible choices when they are scared,\u201d I said. \u201cBut that does not make it okay.\u201d<\/p>\n

She pulled back. \u201cDo I have to see him?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNot until you want to,\u201d I said. \u201cAnd never alone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Later, Mark was allowed into the room with the counselor present.<\/p>\n

I sat beside Sophie, her hand wrapped tightly around mine.<\/p>\n

\u201cHi, bug,\u201d Mark whispered.<\/p>\n

Sophie did not smile.<\/p>\n

He sat across from us. \u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought I was protecting you,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Sophie squeezed my hand harder.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou made Mom disappear too.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mark lowered his head.<\/p>\n

I looked straight at him.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou took a year from us,\u201d I said. \u201cNow you do not get to take her forgiveness, her healing, or her voice. We are going to court.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll do whatever the court decides,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou will,\u201d I replied. \u201cAnd Sophie will not be responsible for making you feel better.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sophie did not come home that night. Healing needed a plan.<\/p>\n

But this time, I signed every form. I attended every meeting. I sat beside my daughter while the truth was put back together piece by piece.<\/p>\n

The counselor admitted Mark had delayed family sessions for months. He had claimed my supposed therapist advised against contact. He had controlled calls, records, and updates.<\/p>\n

In court, Mark was given supervised visits and ordered into counseling. The investigation into his false statements remained open. He had to surrender Sophie\u2019s records, bank statements, and every letter he had kept from me.<\/p>\n
