\nhad come back from my business trip to Monterrey three hours earlier than expected. For two weeks, I had been working nonstop to close a major campaign for the company where I worked as sales director. I was exhausted, barefoot with my heels in one hand and my suitcase still beside me, but I was happy because I would finally see my three-year-old daughter, Camila.<\/p>\n

Every month, I transferred 35,000 pesos to my mother-in-law, Do\u00f1a Carmen, so she could look after Camila while I worked. On top of that, I paid for groceries, utilities, the housekeeper, my father-in-law\u2019s medicine, Daniel\u2019s extra credit card, and even Valeria\u2019s little luxuries.<\/p>\n

I believed my daughter was safe with Family.<\/p>\n

I was wrong.
\nThe moment I entered, the smell of seafood filled the apartment. The dining table was covered with shrimp, oysters, octopus, lobster, crab, and expensive wine. Do\u00f1a Carmen sat there laughing like royalty. My husband Daniel poured her another glass. Valeria and her boyfriend filmed everything as if they were dining in an upscale Restaurant .<\/p>\n

\u201cMom, this is better than Acapulco,\u201d Valeria said. \u201cGood thing Mariana makes such good money.\u201d<\/p>\n

Do\u00f1a Carmen laughed loudly.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, that is what she works for. If we don\u2019t enjoy it, who will?\u201d<\/p>\n

Then they saw me.<\/p>\n

Silence fell instantly.<\/p>\n

Daniel stood up.<\/p>\n

\u201cMariana, you\u2019re back already? Why didn\u2019t you tell me? Come sit, there\u2019s still\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

I cut him off.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere is Camila?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat did you do to my daughter?\u201d I asked, strangely calm.<\/p>\n

Do\u00f1a Carmen wiped her mouth.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t be dramatic, Mariana. Children shouldn\u2019t eat seafood anyway. Besides, a little hardship teaches them character. You treat her like a princess.\u201d<\/p>\n

Valeria laughed.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s why girls become spoiled.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked at Daniel, waiting for even a hint of shame.<\/p>\n

But he only sighed.<\/p>\n

\u201cMariana, don\u2019t make this bigger than it is. My mother knows how to raise children. Camila needs to learn she can\u2019t always have everything handed to her.\u201d<\/p>\n

I held my daughter tighter.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re right,\u201d I said quietly.<\/p>\n

They stared at me, confused.<\/p>\n

With Camila in my arms, I walked toward the door. Before leaving, I turned back one last time.<\/p>\n
