I left Claire\u2019s office with the recording copied onto a flash drive, my hands shaking so badly that I had to sit in my car for ten minutes before I could drive away.<\/p>\n

My first feeling was not anger.<\/p>\n

It was disbelief.<\/p>\n

Ethan was my son. I had taught him to ride a bike in the driveway. I had stayed awake all night when he broke his arm in fifth grade. I had paid off his student loans after his first business failed because he told me he only needed one clean start.<\/p>\n

Marissa was my daughter. She had held my hand at her mother\u2019s funeral and promised that we would look after each other. I bought her first car. I paid for her divorce lawyer. I watched her children whenever she said she needed room to breathe.
\nAnd now they were speaking about me like I was an obstacle.<\/p>\n

Not a father.<\/p>\n

Not a human being.<\/p>\n

An obstacle.<\/p>\n

I did not go straight home. I drove to my attorney\u2019s office in Sacramento. His name was David Walsh, and he had been my friend long before he ever handled my estate papers.<\/p>\n

When he saw my face, he shut his office door.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n

I set the flash drive on his desk. \u201cListen.\u201d<\/p>\n

He played the recording once. Then he played it again, taking notes the second time through. By the end, his jaw had tightened.<\/p>\n

\u201cWilliam,\u201d he said carefully, \u201cdid you recently agree to transfer the lake house?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI was going to sign the papers next week.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTo Ethan?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTo Ethan and Marissa equally. They said it would avoid probate complications.\u201d<\/p>\n

David leaned back, staring at me over the rims of his glasses.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat is not how I drafted your estate plan.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWho gave you the new paperwork?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEthan.\u201d<\/p>\n

David stood, walked to a locked file cabinet, and pulled out a folder. \u201cShow me everything he gave you.\u201d<\/p>\n

I handed him the envelope Ethan had brought me two days before the wedding. At the time, I had barely read it. Ethan said it was standard. Marissa said David was old-fashioned and charged too much for simple documents. Vanessa said families should not make everything legal and cold.<\/p>\n

David read the first page and muttered something under his breath.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is not just a transfer.\u201d<\/p>\n

He turned the papers toward me.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey were trying to move the lake house into a limited liability company controlled by Ethan. Then this section gives Marissa financial authority over your accounts if two family members declare you unable to manage your affairs.\u201d<\/p>\n

My mouth went dry.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey could do that?\u201d<\/p>\n

With the wrong signatures and a careless notary, they could try.\u201d<\/p>\n

I thought about my wife, Anne. The lake house had belonged to her before we married. She left it to me because she trusted me to keep it in the family. I had almost handed it to people who laughed about weaponizing her memory against me.<\/p>\n

David reached for the phone.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to revoke any pending authorization immediately. We also need to notify your bank, freeze major transfers, update your medical directive, and remove them as emergency contacts for now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Those words hurt more than I expected.<\/p>\n

Remove them.<\/p>\n

My children.<\/p>\n

But then Ethan\u2019s voice returned inside my head.<\/p>\n

He still thinks we\u2019re his family.<\/p>\n

I looked at David.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo it,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

By sunset, every door they had planned to walk through was locked.<\/p>\n
