PART 2<\/strong><\/h1>\n

The weeks after Frank left were quiet in the cruelest way.<\/p>\n

I cried over his mug in the dishwasher, the empty hook where his keys used to hang, and the towel he always used after showers. Aria came by one Friday and found me folding laundry.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom, have you eaten today?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m trying,\u201d I said. \u201cI will.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then came Frank\u2019s social media posts.<\/p>\n

He didn\u2019t write, \u201cI cheated on my wife after twenty-seven years.\u201d Instead, he posted a photo with Brittany at an outdoor market and wrote, \u201cLife is too short to stay where you\u2019re no longer seen. Sometimes choosing happiness means choosing yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brittany commented, \u201cProud of you for choosing joy.\u201d<\/p>\n

I turned my phone over.<\/p>\n

That night, Aria said, \u201cDad is making it sound like you stopped loving him years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe needs that story,\u201d I told her.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause without it, he\u2019s just a man who left.\u201d<\/p>\n

Atlas texted soon after: \u201cDad\u2019s lying. We know who he really is.\u201d<\/p>\n

I read his words until they blurred. Then I looked at my tired face in the mirror and whispered, \u201cNot gone. Just buried.\u201d<\/p>\n

Three months later, I went into the garage. Not to heal. I only wanted Frank\u2019s golf shoes and old boxes out of my laundry room.<\/p>\n

Behind the winter blankets, I found a taped cardboard box. Across the top, in Frank\u2019s handwriting, were the words:<\/p>\n

\u201cFamily tapes \/ Greta work stuff \/ Do not toss.\u201d<\/p>\n

Inside were dozens of old camcorder tapes: Christmas 2001, Atlas baseball, Aria recital, Dad promotion dinner.<\/p>\n

Under the tapes was my old work folder.<\/p>\n

Before school lunches, doctor forms, and everyone else\u2019s schedules, I had worked in office management, payroll, and administration. Inside were certificates, my resume, and a letter offering me a supervisor position when Aria was still a baby.<\/p>\n

On top was a note from Frank:<\/p>\n

\u201cJust until the kids are older. Your turn is coming. I promise.\u201d<\/p>\n

Aria read it and went still.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe knew,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n

I sat on an overturned paint bucket. \u201cYes. He knew what I gave up. He just stopped caring.\u201d<\/p>\n

We took the tapes to a local IT store and had everything digitized. Four days later, I sat at the kitchen table with Aria beside me and Atlas on video call.<\/p>\n

The first clip showed younger me carrying a sleeping Atlas from the car while baby Aria rested on my hip.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou carried both of us?\u201d Atlas asked softly.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou were four,\u201d I said. \u201cStill my baby.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another clip showed me in the kitchen, flour on my face.<\/p>\n

Frank\u2019s younger voice came from behind the camera. \u201cLook at this beautiful woman, feeding the whole school again.\u201d<\/p>\n

Aria whispered, \u201cHe sounded like he loved you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe did,\u201d I said. \u201cAt least then.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then came the promotion dinner. Frank stood with champagne in his hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis woman is the reason I have anything,\u201d he said on screen. \u201cGreta believed in me before I believed in myself. She gave up chances of her own so I could take mine.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then he lifted his glass.<\/p>\n

\u201cGreta, I promise you. Your turn is coming.\u201d<\/p>\n

The kitchen went silent.<\/p>\n

Atlas finally said, \u201cHe remembered what you gave up. He just hoped no one else would.\u201d<\/p>\n
