I married the boy who once made me believe no one could ever love me.
\nHe swore he had changed.<\/p>\n

But the morning after our wedding, Kevin looked at my suitcase by the bedroom door and said, \u201cPack the rest, Maggie. Then leave.\u201d<\/p>\n

He sat in his wheelchair near the window, his wedding ring still on his finger.
\n\u201cKevin,\u201d I whispered. \u201cWe got married yesterday.\u201d
\nHis face hardened.
\nYesterday was a mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n

In that moment, I was seventeen again, standing in a school cafeteria while everyone laughed.<\/p>\n

Kevin had been the boy who ruined me in high school. He spread lies, mocked me in front of his friends, and told me, \u201cNo one will ever love you.\u201d<\/p>\n

For years, I ate lunch in the bathroom because the cafeteria felt like a stage where I was always the joke.<\/p>\n

Nearly twenty years later, I saw him again in a grocery store. He was in a wheelchair, struggling to reach a jar.<\/p>\n

I almost walked away.<\/p>\n

Then the jar slipped, and I caught it.<\/p>\n

He looked up.<\/p>\n

\u201cMaggie?\u201d<\/p>\n

I wanted to hate him.<\/p>\n

At the caf\u00e9, Kevin told me the truth.<\/p>\n

His father had once called him weak after a football injury. I had seen him crying and asked if he was okay.<\/p>\n

Instead of accepting kindness, Kevin punished me for seeing his shame.<\/p>\n

You punished me for being kind,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes,\u201d he admitted.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat explains it,\u201d I told him. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t excuse it.\u201d<\/p>\n

He understood.<\/p>\n

Months passed. He didn\u2019t rush forgiveness. He listened when I was angry. He corrected people who praised the boy he used to be.<\/p>\n

My sister Matilda warned me.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can forgive him,\u201d she said, \u201cbut don\u2019t forget what he did.\u201d<\/p>\n
