Our wedding was small and quiet.<\/p>\n

Before the ceremony, Matilda fixed my veil and asked, \u201cLast chance to run?\u201d<\/p>\n

She was not joking.<\/p>\n

But I stayed.<\/p>\n

Kevin waited for me with trembling hands. During his vows, he looked straight at me and said, \u201cI spent years making you feel small. I want to spend whatever time I have left making sure you never feel small beside me again.\u201d<\/p>\n

For one hopeful moment, I believed truth had finally defeated the past.<\/p>\n

That night, everything changed.<\/p>\n

In the hotel suite, Kevin\u2019s phone buzzed. The message was from Travis, an old high school friend.<\/p>\n

People are already joking about the blog woman marrying her bully. Alumni brunch tomorrow should be interesting.<\/p>\n

My stomach sank.<\/p>\n

Kevin shut down immediately.<\/p>\n

I asked him to talk to me, but his voice turned cold.<\/p>\n

The next morning, he was already dressed, staring out the window.<\/p>\n

\u201cPack your things and go home,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe just got married yesterday.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen yesterday was a mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n

There he was again.<\/p>\n

The boy from high school had not disappeared.<\/p>\n

He had only been waiting.<\/p>\n

I packed with shaking hands and drove back to my apartment, the one I had kept because some part of me had never fully trusted the dream.<\/p>\n

The next morning, a knock woke me.<\/p>\n

Mr. Davis, Kevin\u2019s lawyer, stood on my porch with an envelope.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not here for a divorce,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

I almost shut the door.<\/p>\n

Then he explained that Kevin had prepared legal documents to protect me. He had made sure I owed him nothing if I walked away. He had also placed money into a counseling scholarship fund in my name.<\/p>\n

I told him I didn\u2019t want Kevin\u2019s money.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis isn\u2019t about money,\u201d Mr. Davis said. \u201cHe wanted no one to say you married him for it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then he asked me to read the letter.<\/p>\n

The first line nearly took my breath away.<\/p>\n

\u201cMaggie, you were never the liar. I was.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kevin was at the alumni brunch, reading the same confession in front of former classmates, teachers, and the alumni board.<\/p>\n

He had sent me away so no one could accuse me of forcing him to confess.<\/p>\n

But once again, he had made a decision for me.<\/p>\n

That was not love.<\/p>\n

That was control.<\/p>\n

So I grabbed my keys.<\/p>\n

Not to save him.<\/p>\n
