When Patricia tried to defend herself, claiming Lily wasn\u2019t really his child, Daniel\u2019s expression hardened.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe is my child,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd because you refuse to respect that, this dinner is over.\u201d<\/p>\n

Harold, Daniel\u2019s father, attempted to calm the situation.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour mother didn\u2019t mean anything by it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Daniel pointed toward two empty chairs leaning against the wall.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was room for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nobody could argue with that.<\/p>\n

To everyone\u2019s surprise, Mason spoke next.<\/p>\n

Then Chloe stood up.<\/p>\n

She walked over to Lily and offered her own chair.<\/p>\n

\u201cSit with me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lily\u2019s eyes filled with tears again.<\/p>\n

For the first time, Patricia realized nobody was supporting her.<\/p>\n

Not even her grandchildren.<\/p>\n

Before leaving, Lily handed Daniel the birthday gift she had made herself.<\/p>\n

Inside was a small wooden picture frame she had painted by hand.<\/p>\n

The photo showed the three of us at the county fair.<\/p>\n

At the bottom, she had written two simple words:<\/p>\n

Daniel held the frame against his chest.<\/p>\n

Then he turned toward his parents.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou wanted my real family at this table,\u201d he said quietly.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou just tried to throw her out.\u201d<\/p>\n

We left without cutting the cake.<\/p>\n

Without opening presents.<\/p>\n

Without saying goodbye.<\/p>\n

Later that night, as we drove home, Lily sat in the back seat holding Daniel\u2019s hand.<\/p>\n

After several minutes she whispered:<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you still my daddy?\u201d<\/p>\n

Daniel immediately pulled the car over.<\/p>\n

Lily wrapped her arms around him.<\/p>\n

Neither of them let go for a long time.<\/p>\n

The following week, Patricia tried to rewrite what happened.<\/p>\n

According to her version, she had merely been arranging seats.<\/p>\n

She never pushed Lily.<\/p>\n

She never excluded her.<\/p>\n

She never used the words \u201creal children.\u201d<\/p>\n

But nobody believed her.<\/p>\n

Not Daniel.<\/p>\n

Not Mason.<\/p>\n

Not Chloe.<\/p>\n

Not even Daniel\u2019s ex-wife Rachel.<\/p>\n

When Rachel heard the story, she was horrified.<\/p>\n

\u201cPatricia should be ashamed of herself,\u201d she told us.<\/p>\n

That support meant more than she probably realized.<\/p>\n

A few weeks later, Patricia arrived at our house carrying cupcakes and pretending she wanted peace.<\/p>\n

Daniel gave her one chance.<\/p>\n
