Six hours later, my new husband opened the locked room in his house and showed me the real reason my father had been crying.<\/p>\n
At forty-four, I was ashamed of how badly I still wanted to be loved. I had survived one painful marriage, one divorce, two children, and enough awkward first dates to make loneliness feel easier.<\/p>\n
My children, Max and Juliet, were adults by then. They kept telling me it was finally my turn to be happy.<\/p>\n
Then my father invited Russell to Sunday dinner.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s my oldest friend, Ella,\u201d Dad said while I helped set the table. \u201cHe\u2019s fifty-seven, widowed, quiet. He\u2019s a decent man.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cDad, I\u2019m not dating your friend.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI didn\u2019t say dating.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou used your matchmaking voice.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t have a matchmaking voice.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou absolutely do.\u201d<\/p>\n
Russell arrived with wine and a bag of peaches from his yard. He had silver at his temples, gentle hands, and a way of listening that made people finish their thoughts instead of hiding them.<\/p>\n
I noticed that first.<\/p>\n
I also noticed how closely my father watched us.<\/p>\n
Over Sunday dinners, long walks, and late-night phone calls, I stopped caring what anyone thought. Six months later, Russell proposed in my father\u2019s backyard beneath the oak tree where Max used to bury toy cars.<\/p>\n
Dad cried before I even answered.<\/p>\n
I said yes.<\/p>\n
The morning of the wedding, Juliet fixed my earrings and studied my reflection.<\/p>\n
\u201cAre you sure, Mom?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m sure, Jules. I promise.\u201d<\/p>\n
Max leaned against the doorway.<\/p>\n
\u201cI like Russell,\u201d he said. \u201cBut I don\u2019t like how hard Grandpa pushed this.\u201d<\/p>\n
Juliet added, \u201cAnd I still want to know why Russell gets strange whenever someone mentions that locked room.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s storage,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n
But even as I said it, I remembered how quickly Russell had answered when I first asked.<\/p>\n
The wedding was small, warm, and beautiful. Dad walked me down the aisle with tears on his face. Russell stood at the front, watching me like I was something he had never allowed himself to want.<\/p>\n
For the first time in years, I believed life might still be kind.<\/p>\n
That night, Russell carried my suitcase into his house. I kicked off my heels near the stairs and told him I would unpack after the honeymoon.<\/p>\n
He did not move.<\/p>\n
His eyes were fixed on the locked door at the end of the hallway.<\/p>\n
\u201cRussell?\u201d<\/p>\n
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a brass key.<\/p>\n
My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhy do you have that?\u201d<\/p>\n
His thumb moved over the key.<\/p>\n
\u201cBecause I lied to you.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAbout storage?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat\u2019s in there?\u201d<\/p>\n
He looked at me, and the fear in his face made me colder than anger would have.<\/p>\n
\u201cI should have shown you before the wedding,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThen show me now.\u201d<\/p>\n
His hand shook as he unlocked the door.<\/p>\n
The room smelled of dust and old perfume. Inside was a white vanity, a silver hairbrush, a pale blue dress, and a carefully made bed.<\/p>\n
It was Edith\u2019s room.<\/p>\n
His late wife\u2019s room.<\/p>\n
I turned to him.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou brought me here on our wedding night to show me a shrine to your dead wife?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s not what you think.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat do I think?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat I kept her instead of choosing you.\u201d<\/p>\n
I looked around the room.<\/p>\n
\u201cDidn\u2019t you?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cNo,\u201d he said. \u201cYou\u2019re the reason I opened the door.\u201d<\/p>\n
On a shelf near the window, I saw baby shoes, a small clay handprint, and a yellowed card written in purple crayon.<\/p>\n
To Daddy.<\/p>\n
I picked it up.<\/p>\n
\u201cLauren made this?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWhy is it here with Edith\u2019s things?\u201d<\/p>\n
Russell took one step inside, then stopped.<\/p>\n
\u201cBecause Lauren is part of the secret.\u201d<\/p>\n
I set the card down carefully.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat secret?\u201d<\/p>\n
He looked at the floor.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo. Look at me.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cLauren is Edith\u2019s daughter,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI know that.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cShe is Edith and Martin\u2019s daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n
For a moment, I did not understand.<\/p>\n
Then I did.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy father?\u201d<\/p>\n
Russell nodded.<\/p>\n
The room tilted beneath me.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnswer this first,\u201d I said. \u201cIs there any blood between you and me?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cNo,\u201d he said quickly. \u201cNone. I am not related to you. Lauren is Edith\u2019s daughter. Martin fathered her while he was married to your mother. I raised her.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cBecause Dad wouldn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd Dad knew before today?\u201d<\/p>\n
Russell closed his eyes.<\/p>\n
\u201cSay it.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n
I gripped the shelf.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe walked me down the aisle today.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat is why I opened the door tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n
