\u201cShe shouldn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

I examined the message again. Although Monica had sent it from her personal number, I couldn\u2019t tell who had photographed my house.<\/p>\n

The gray sedan immediately came to mind.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think someone\u2019s following me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Opal remained composed.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen keep everything. We\u2019re not going to hand them information or opportunities.\u201d<\/p>\n

That afternoon, I contacted Russell Keane.<\/p>\n

His office stood near central Columbus. After hearing my account, he carefully avoided guaranteeing a successful outcome.<\/p>\n

\u201cI need to review the case file, Rebecca. A final conviction doesn\u2019t disappear because someone finds inconsistencies. But if there\u2019s new evidence, an attorney can evaluate how to present it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The following day, I brought everything I\u2019d saved: four printed emails, a business bank statement, and Buckeye Medical Supply\u2019s incorporation documents.<\/p>\n

Russell spent almost two hours examining them.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis says $320,000 was transferred to Halston Ridge Supply for a supposed equipment purchase.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat equipment never arrived.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWho had access to approve payments?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMe and Monica. Trevor could request payments, but he couldn\u2019t approve them on his own.\u201d<\/p>\n

He indicated a notation I\u2019d overlooked throughout the intervening years.<\/p>\n

One payment authorization carried an administrative identifier: MH-17.<\/p>\n

It belonged to Monica.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt trial they said that code only showed who entered the transaction,\u201d I remembered.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat may be true. That\u2019s why we need the original records, not conclusions drawn from a copy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Russell instructed me to reconstruct the entire sequence of events.<\/p>\n

Back at Opal\u2019s house, I spent three evenings organizing hospital visits, conversations, payment dates, and other relevant records.<\/p>\n

Eventually, a contradiction emerged.<\/p>\n

According to the prosecution\u2019s records, I\u2019d approved an $89,000 transfer at 11:43 a.m. on June 18, 2021.<\/p>\n

But that day I\u2019d accompanied Loretta to a medical procedure. I distinctly recalled Trevor asking me to give Monica my phone so she could resolve a payroll issue.<\/p>\n

Nearly two hours passed before Monica returned it.<\/p>\n

That didn\u2019t conclusively demonstrate misuse of my banking credentials, but it identified a possible method.<\/p>\n

I requested the hospital\u2019s available records and supplied Russell with Monica\u2019s emails asking for my phone.<\/p>\n

Russell also introduced me to Helen Marsh, an attorney who reviewed the criminal proceedings and investigated whether a petition to overturn my conviction could be supported by new evidence of actual innocence.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, I located Gordon Pierce, Buckeye\u2019s former accountant.<\/p>\n

Rather than approaching him unexpectedly, I had Helen arrange a formal interview.<\/p>\n

Gordon agreed.<\/p>\n

He arrived looking anxious and carried an old, battered folder.<\/p>\n

\u201cRebecca, I should have spoken up years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n

Inside were copies of accounting reconciliations he\u2019d retained before leaving Buckeye.<\/p>\n

They revealed that funds sent to Halston Ridge Supply eventually reached an account associated with another company, one naming Trevor as its authorized agent.<\/p>\n

But Gordon possessed something even more significant.<\/p>\n

He produced minutes from a supposed shareholder meeting held March 14, 2022, documenting my alleged transfer of a majority ownership stake to Trevor.<\/p>\n

Every page bore what appeared to be my signature.<\/p>\n

I examined the date repeatedly.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s impossible.\u201d<\/p>\n

Russell looked at me.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause on March 14, I was already in custody. I didn\u2019t even leave the prison that day for a hearing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yet the document described my personal attendance at a meeting in a private office.<\/p>\n

Gordon explained that Monica had submitted those papers after my arrest and demanded corresponding changes to the corporate stock ledger.<\/p>\n

\u201cI refused to sign off on a reconciliation, and they fired me,\u201d he admitted.<\/p>\n

Helen began obtaining certified custody records and verifying the supposed shareholder documentation.<\/p>\n

We finally possessed something beyond my testimony contradicting Trevor and Monica.<\/p>\n

Two days afterward, Trevor phoned me.<\/p>\n

\u201cQuit harassing Gordon. You already lost once.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI won\u2019t discuss this with you again without lawyers.\u201d<\/p>\n

He disconnected.<\/p>\n

I documented the conversation and informed Helen.<\/p>\n

The following Thursday, while hanging freshly washed sheets outdoors, I heard a vehicle stopping near Opal\u2019s property.<\/p>\n

It was the same gray sedan.<\/p>\n

Monica stepped out carrying an envelope.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re offering you $90,000,\u201d she announced. \u201cYou sign an agreement, stop investigating, and leave Ohio.\u201d<\/p>\n

Opal watched from the doorway.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not signing anything,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

Monica\u2019s smile disappeared.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you know how little time you have before your house is sold?\u201d<\/p>\n

A wave of dread hit me.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat did you do?\u201d<\/p>\n

She produced a copied deed bearing numerous official stamps and recorder\u2019s annotations.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe property secures a debt that\u2019s in default. If you keep pushing, you could end up with nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n

I skimmed the pages.<\/p>\n

A purported general power of attorney supposedly allowed Trevor to place a mortgage on my house.<\/p>\n

My signature appeared beneath it.<\/p>\n

Then I noticed its document number.<\/p>\n

It matched an old limited power of attorney I\u2019d granted solely for administrative matters.<\/p>\n

Monica leaned close and whispered:<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have until tomorrow to accept. After that, neither your little house nor that old woman will be able to protect you.\u201d<\/p>\n

They hadn\u2019t simply reproduced my signature.<\/p>\n

They appeared to have transformed a genuine, restricted authorization into the basis of another fraudulent transaction.<\/p>\n

Unless we challenged it through proper legal channels, I risked losing the last property still registered in my name.<\/p>\n
