My name is Jennifer Brennan Pruitt, and my life changed dramatically after my father Harold passed away in October of a heart attack. My father was a hardworking man who spent thirty eight years at Republic Steel, always providing a solid foundation for our family alongside my mother Dolores, who taught second grade for over three decades. After his funeral, my mother placed his plain steel Timex watch on her dresser, a watch he had worn every day since buying it in nineteen seventy four. My brother Scott, who had struggled with financial troubles for twenty years despite my father bailing him out numerous times, stayed to help our mother sort through belongings. Soon after he left, the watch vanished. I confronted Scott, who eventually admitted he sold it for a mere forty dollars for gas money because he believed it held no real value. I searched every pawn shop in Mahoning County to no avail, leaving my mother heartbroken and staring at the empty space on her dresser where the watch belonged.

Months later in January, our local watch dealer Ed Pruitt arrived at our brick ranch home on Elm Street alongside Raymond Cole, an estate lawyer from Boardman. Ed had recognized the watch when Scott brought it in on the fourth of October and knew it held immense sentimental value. More importantly, Ed noticed the back of the watch had been deliberately soldered shut, a detail my father had warned him about back in two thousand nineteen. When Ed opened the watch, he found a tightly folded note written by my father in his distinct blocky print. My mother sat on the cold concrete porch step and read the note, which revealed that my father knew Scott would inevitably sell the watch. The note was addressed to my mother and explained that since November of nineteen eighty one, during terrible mill layoffs, my father had been keeping a secret safety deposit box at Mahoning National Bank. He had soldered the watch to ensure whoever found the note was someone who genuinely cared about the watch itself and not just quick money.

The lawyer explained that the safety deposit box at what is now First Commonwealth Bank required both my parents as holders, prompting a highly anticipated visit to the vault the following Monday. My mother used the small brass key my father had cleverly hidden inside his old tackle box to open box two hundred fourteen alongside the bank manager Priya Venkataraman. Inside the long steel drawer, we discovered forty one bank passbooks neatly secured by decades, a property deed from nineteen eighty five, and a small wooden box containing my father’s mother’s lost gold ring. We also found a green cloth bound ledger documenting decades of secret deposits my father had made, starting with twenty dollars and eventually growing to hundreds of dollars every month. The ledger noted times he borrowed money for things like my wedding or Scott’s bail, but he always faithfully repaid it. Mr. Cole calculated the total value of the accounts and accrued interest, revealing that my father had secretly saved over four hundred twelve thousand dollars strictly for my mother to ensure she always had a secure financial floor.
