""

My daughter brought a life-sized cardboard boy to graduation, making her classmates laugh. Even the principal threatened to prevent her from graduating. But when Emma handed him a folded letter, his expression suddenly changed.

“Emma, please tell me you’re not taking that thing to graduation.”

Emma stood before our hallway mirror, adjusting a blue graduation cap on a cardboard figure of a teenage boy.

“His cap is crooked, Mom.”

“Emma, I’m serious.”

“So am I.”

She straightened its matching gown, smiled briefly, then faced me with tearful eyes.

“Mom, promise me you won’t tell anyone,” she whispered. “I need to do this myself.”

I wanted to protest, knowing how cruel teenagers could be toward anything unusual.

But only I understood her reason for making the figure.

“I promise,” I said.

I underestimated how difficult that promise would become.

People stared as we entered the gymnasium.

Emma carried the figure by its cardboard shoulders, its blue graduation outfit matching the other students’.

“Is that her cardboard boyfriend?” someone laughed.

“That’s so creepy!” another girl said, pulling out her phone.

Several classmates turned, and someone began recording.

Emma ignored their remarks, adjusted the cap, and continued walking.

Principal William noticed her.

“Emma, absolutely not. This is a graduation ceremony, not a joke.”

“It’s not a joke, sir.”

“Then remove it. You’re embarrassing yourself and disrupting the ceremony.”

She shook her head.

“Please. I just want him to walk across the stage with me.”

“Put that thing away, or you won’t be walking across that stage at all.”

Students laughed again.

I stood, ready to explain, but Emma silently shook her head at me.

I’d promised.

Reluctantly, I watched her prop the figure against the wall.

The ceremony resumed. Graduates collected their diplomas while speeches passed almost unnoticed by me.

My attention remained on that familiar cardboard face near the entrance.

Two years earlier, such a sight would have seemed unimaginable.

Eventually, William announced my daughter’s name.

“Emma.”

She rose, retrieved the figure, and approached the stage.

“Emma!” William snapped. “I told you to leave that thing!”

She stopped beside the microphone.

“Please, sir. Just give me thirty seconds.”
