“We gave your handmade gifts to Goodwill,” my daughter laughed. “Nobody wants your worthless junk, Mom!” My heart sank. I’d spent six weeks making those presents, even sewing fabric from her late father’s shirt into her quilt. Her husband pushed a document toward me. “Just sign here.” I examined it and smiled. They didn’t know what I owned—or what they stood to lose.

“We gave your handmade gifts to Goodwill,” my daughter said, laughing. “Mom, nobody wants homemade junk when they can buy something nice.”

The dining room went quiet except for ice rattling in my glass. My son-in-law Grant smirked over his wine while my granddaughter Sophie stared at her plate.

I’d spent six weeks preparing their Christmas gifts: a walnut music box for Sophie, engraved with the first notes of her grandfather’s lullaby; a quilt for Celeste, made from dresses I’d sewn during her childhood; and hand-turned wooden desk organizers for Grant, polished honey-gold.

Despite arthritis, I’d worked past midnight on them. The quilt even contained part of my late husband’s favorite shirt, carefully preserved since his funeral. Celeste discarded everything in an afternoon. Every stitch represented a memory I thought she might want to hold onto, especially the fabric from her father. I had chosen those scraps because buying something expensive could never have carried the same meaning.

“You could have told me,” I said.

“Why? So you’d cry?” She shrugged. “You’re seventy, Mom. It’s time to stop cluttering our lives with your little projects.”

Grant slid over a folder. “Speaking of simplifying things, we need you to sign these. Routine property management. Celeste and I are expanding our investment business.”

Beneath harmless-looking introductory pages, I found authorization to secure financing against their home.

Except I owned that house.

“That’s quite a responsibility,” I said.

Grant leaned back. “We already take care of you, Eleanor. You can trust us with a few signatures.”

In fact, I paid my own bills, drove myself, and owned the debt-free property. They rented it from me, and I’d overlooked their late payments. I’d also learned not to alert dishonest people before understanding their plans.

“I’ll have my attorney review it.”

Celeste laughed again. “An attorney? For family? You’re getting paranoid.”

Sophie squeezed my hand beneath the table. When I left, she followed me outside.

“Grandma,” she whispered, “I wanted the music box. Mom wouldn’t let me keep it.”

I kissed her forehead. Rain silvered my old sedan’s windshield. Behind the bright windows, I imagined Celeste and Grant congratulating themselves on manipulating me.

They’d forgotten two things: before becoming a grandmother who quilted, I’d built a furniture company over thirty years, starting in a rented garage. And their house was only a small piece of what I owned.
