My Daughter Inherited a $4 Million Beachfront Mansion While I Received an Abandoned Cabin—But My Late Wife Had Left a Secret Nobody Expected

My daughter inherited a luxurious $4 million oceanfront mansion in La Jolla. I was left with an old, deteriorating cabin hidden in the California mountains. She laughed at my inheritance, called me a worthless old man, and told me to disappear from her life.

But when I finally unlocked the cabin’s front door, I discovered something that made my hands tremble.

My late wife had been hiding a secret that could change everything.

“You heard the attorney, Dad,” Vanessa said, swinging the mansion keys around her finger. “This house is mine now.”

I stood silently in the living room where my wife, Margaret, had celebrated her last Christmas.

“Vanessa, your mother passed away only three weeks ago. Can’t we wait before making any decisions?”

She rolled her eyes.

“That’s exactly your problem. You always expect people to take care of you. Mom finally understood you were nothing but a burden.”

Her husband, Brandon, stood near the marble fireplace with a smirk.

“There’s a retirement facility nearby, Robert. Maybe you should look into it.”

I was seventy-one years old.

For forty-three years, I’d loved Margaret, raised our daughter, and worked as a structural engineer to support our family.

Now I stood beside two suitcases while my daughter celebrated gaining ownership of the house we’d once shared.

Margaret’s will had stunned everyone.

Vanessa received our magnificent beachfront property.

I inherited an aging wooden cabin near Julian, California, abandoned for years and surrounded by overgrown vegetation.

Vanessa jokingly called it “the termite hotel.”

Brandon laughed.

“You might get a few dollars if someone wants the wood.”

I didn’t respond.

I simply loaded my belongings into my car and left.

Behind me, Vanessa was already discussing renovations with an interior designer.

Three hours later, I reached the mountain property.

My heart sank.

The roof looked unstable. Weeds covered the porch, and several windows had been boarded shut.

It appeared completely neglected.

Margaret had always loved this place, though.

Before her illness, she sometimes disappeared here for weekends, explaining that she needed a little quiet time.

I’d never questioned her.

But standing outside the cabin, I couldn’t understand why she’d chosen this as my inheritance.

Rain began falling as I approached the entrance.

I inserted the old key into the lock.

The door opened with a faint creak.

Then I froze.

The interior looked nothing like the exterior.
