“Ivy isn’t welcome at Thanksgiving,” my mother declared coldly. “Your sister wants an adults-only celebration.” I glanced at my eight-year-old daughter, who’d spent weeks creating Thanksgiving cards for everyone. Then I asked, “So you’re excluding my child from the $8,400 lake house I’m paying for?” Mom laughed. “Don’t be dramatic, Rachel.” I quietly ended the call, canceled the rental, stopped every payment, and took back my sister’s SUV. By morning, 31 calls had gone unanswered…

“Plans have changed. Ivy isn’t welcome at Thanksgiving,” my mother informed me over the phone.

Looking at the $8,400 receipt for our family’s rented lake house, I asked, “So you’re banning my eight-year-old daughter from the vacation I’m paying for?”

Mom sighed.

“Your sister wants an adults-only celebration, Rachel. Don’t make this difficult.”

Across the kitchen, Ivy was decorating a paper turkey with glitter. She’d spent three weeks preparing cards for her grandparents.

“Mom, Ivy is family.”

“Vanessa says children ruin sophisticated gatherings.”

Ironically, Vanessa’s seventeen-year-old twins qualified as adults, while my daughter was apparently unwelcome.

I’m Rachel Morgan, thirty-six, a single mother, and my family’s usual financial rescuer.

For seven years, I’d covered my parents’ property taxes, Vanessa’s emergency expenses, and family holidays.

Since my divorce, they rarely checked on Ivy or me. They cared more about my available credit.

For Thanksgiving, I’d reserved a six-bedroom Vermont lake house, arranged catering, rented two SUVs, and funded everyone’s travel.

My parents had called it a family reunion. Now Ivy was excluded.

“What am I supposed to do with Ivy?” I asked.

“Find a babysitter,” Mom replied. “You’re always so dramatic.”

“Then I suppose our plans really have changed.”

She sounded pleased.

“Good. I’m glad you’re being mature.”

I hung up.

Ivy glanced toward me.

“Is Grandma excited about my cards?”

I struggled against my tears.

“Sweetheart, we’re going to have Thanksgiving somewhere special.”

“Will everyone come?”

I crouched beside her.

“Everyone who wants to spend it with us.”

She smiled and resumed decorating.

I opened my laptop.

The lake house, catering arrangements, and rented vehicles were all booked under my name.

Even the luxury SUV Vanessa had borrowed six months earlier, supposedly while her car underwent repairs, belonged to me.

My personal account also funded my parents’ discretionary spending through automatic transfers.

I could legally end every arrangement.

My relatives expected me to tolerate their cruelty as usual.

But I wasn’t fighting for Ivy’s place at their table anymore.

I would take her somewhere she was genuinely wanted.
