## PART 1 \u2014 THE HOUSE HE THOUGHT WAS HIS TO CONTROL<\/strong><\/h1>\n

My husband had been gone just one week when Daniel called about throwing me out. He showed no interest in my grief; he only wanted a moving date.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom, the house is going on the market,\u201d Daniel announced. \u201cYou need to be out by Friday.\u201d<\/p>\n

From the kitchen window, I watched the roses Robert had planted thirty years before.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhose decision is that?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cMine. Dad left everything to me. The lawyer confirmed it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd where am I supposed to go?\u201d<\/p>\n

Daniel released an irritated sigh.<\/p>\n

\u201cAssisted living, maybe. Jessica found a decent place. You\u2019re seventy. You can\u2019t manage a property this size.\u201d<\/p>\n

I nearly laughed at the idea that reaching seventy had somehow made me incapable of thinking or making decisions about my own life.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat about my belongings?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTake whatever fits in two suitcases. The furniture stays. Jessica already hired a photographer.\u201d<\/p>\n

I shut my eyes.<\/p>\n

Robert and I had raised Daniel here. I\u2019d taught him to bicycle in the driveway, nursed him through childhood fevers, and helped fund college while Robert worked extra hours.<\/p>\n

Now he treated evicting me like an awkward errand.<\/p>\n

\u201cDoes Jessica know you\u2019re calling me?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe suggested it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Naturally.<\/p>\n

For five years, Jessica had complained that our home was wasted on two old people. She admired its marble stairs, sweeping windows, and prestigious address, but not its occupants.<\/p>\n

\u201cFriday,\u201d Daniel repeated. \u201cDon\u2019t make this difficult.\u201d<\/p>\n

I glanced toward the leather suitcase standing in the hallway.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t worry, sweetheart. I\u2019ve already packed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGood. Finally, you\u2019re being reasonable.\u201d<\/p>\n

When he disconnected, I remained still briefly.<\/p>\n

Then I retrieved a kitchen-drawer photograph of Robert outside a lovely Montana farmhouse, smiling beneath a vast blue sky.<\/p>\n

Three years earlier, I\u2019d bought that ranch using my personal investment funds. Robert enjoyed our visits, but ownership was mine alone.<\/p>\n

Daniel had never heard about the ranch. He also had a surprisingly incomplete understanding of the property he was so eager to put on the market.<\/p>\n

Robert owned our home outright and had indeed bequeathed it to Daniel.<\/p>\n

Yet six months before dying, he also signed a recorded agreement granting me lifelong occupancy rights.<\/p>\n

Daniel\u2019s supposedly reassuring lawyer hadn\u2019t brought it up because Daniel hadn\u2019t asked.<\/p>\n

I called my attorney.<\/p>\n

\u201cMargaret?\u201d my attorney answered.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s time,\u201d I said. \u201cAnd I want everything documented.\u201d<\/p>\n
