I woke on my wedding morning to find my head completely shaved. My fiancé had left a handwritten note on my pillow: “Now you look as ridiculous as you really are.” After examining my reflection, I burst out laughing. “Oh, sweetheart, you picked the perfect day.” He had no idea I intended to give him $15 million from my inheritance. But the altar held another surprise.

I awoke with a bare scalp and that note in my fiancé’s handwriting: “Now you look as ridiculous as you really are.”

I studied my reflection, then laughed instead of crying or screaming.

“Oh, sweetheart,” I murmured, feeling the tender patches where my long brown hair had been. “You picked the perfect day.”

At eight that morning, Carter Whitmore and I were scheduled to marry before two hundred guests at the Grand Bellmont Hotel. At nine, immediately after signing our marriage certificate, I intended to transfer $15 million from my late grandfather’s trust into a shared investment account.

Carter knew I’d inherited money, but he had no idea how much. I’d allowed him to think I was simply “comfortable.” He often joked that marrying me was practically charity.

His mother, Diane, was even more insulting.

“She’s sweet,” she’d once remarked to friends while I stood only six feet away, “but Carter could have done much better.”

They laughed; I smiled.

They insulted; I remembered.

My phone vibrated with a message from Carter.

Hope you learned your lesson. Don’t embarrass me today. Wear a wig.

Then his sister Vanessa texted.

OMG. He actually did it? Mom said you deserved it after refusing to let Carter control your inheritance. Honestly, just apologize and enjoy your wedding.

My smile vanished. His family knew.

Two nights earlier, Carter poured champagne until I felt dizzy. I fell asleep early, and he helped me into bed.

He apparently drugged me to keep me unconscious while shaving my head.

I saved screenshots, then made one call.

“Rachel?” came a composed voice.

It was Margaret Sloan, my grandfather’s attorney and executor of the trust.

“I need you at the Bellmont by ten.”

“What happened?”

Looking at Carter’s note, I answered, “Bring the transfer documents.”

“The fifteen million?”

“Yes.”

“And the prenuptial amendment Carter’s attorney sent yesterday?”

“Bring that too.”

Margaret sounded concerned.

“Rachel, that amendment gives him extensive rights over marital property.”

“I know.”

“You haven’t signed it.”

“I know.”

After another pause, she asked, “What are you planning?”

I drew back the hotel curtains.

Florists carried white roses inside, caterers rushed through side doors, and Diane supervised as if this were her wedding.
