My husband’s covered breakfast tray finally made his mother recoil from the habits she’d expected everyone to tolerate. I thought he’d finally stood up for me. But her furious reaction exposed a promise he’d secretly made, turning one simple boundary into a far bigger problem.

When my mother-in-law, Diane, sold her house, she asked to stay with us for six weeks while construction on her new condominium was completed.

I agreed immediately.

Six weeks seemed reasonable. I even purchased a more comfortable pillow for her.

Twice weekly, Diane looked after our four-year-old son, Noah, while I worked.

One afternoon, I returned to find them constructing a zoo from couch cushions. Diane was pretending to be a walrus.

“The walrus needs a lawyer,” Noah announced.

“The walrus has one,” she said. “She’s a pelican.”

Noah collapsed against her, giggling.

I quietly lowered my work bag, unwilling to disturb them. I’d worried throughout my drive home that he might have missed me.

Instead, he was having such fun he hadn’t noticed my arrival.

By the third day, however, Diane’s unpleasant eating habits had become impossible to ignore.

I caught her eating potato salad directly from its container, licking the spoon before dipping it back inside.

“Diane, please don’t do that.”

When I explained my concern, she laughed.

“Oh, honey. You’d think I dipped it in poison. We’re family, aren’t we?”

Soon she was doing the same with pasta sauce and mashed potatoes.

Then I discovered her sharing Noah’s yogurt, repeatedly returning his spoon to the cup after putting it in her own mouth.

“I’m asking you not to put your saliva in his food.”

“You’re a germaphobe, sweetheart.”

My husband, Mark, occasionally reminded her to use clean utensils. But whenever she dismissed him, he simply returned to his coffee.

I kept hoping he’d recognize that she wasn’t listening.

Once, as I reached to remove a contaminated bowl, Diane sighed. I hesitated, uncomfortable about arguing in front of Noah again.
