Three days after my father passed away, I walked into the kitchen at ten-thirty on a Wednesday morning and found my husband drinking coffee in his sweatpants.<\/strong><\/h1>\n

I stopped in the doorway.<\/p>\n

For most of our twenty-two-year marriage, Mark had left for work before eight, travel mug in one hand and company phone in the other, usually complaining about some distributor who had decided its problem could not wait.<\/p>\n

Seeing him at the kitchen table in the middle of a weekday felt immediately wrong.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy are you home?\u201d<\/p>\n

Mark looked up from his laptop.<\/p>\n

\u201cMorning to you, too.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s Wednesday.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know what day it is.\u201d<\/p>\n

For half a second, I assumed he had taken time off because of Dad. Walter Hail had been gone barely seventy-two hours, and I had spent the morning arguing with a florist about whether a man who considered decorative pillows a personal insult would have wanted something called Heavenly Garden at his funeral.<\/p>\n

Then I noticed Mark\u2019s company phone was gone.<\/p>\n

\u201cDid something happen at work?\u201d<\/p>\n

He closed the laptop.<\/p>\n

\u201cI quit.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stared at him.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou what?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI resigned.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYesterday.\u201d<\/p>\n

He took another sip of coffee.<\/p>\n

\u201cClare, don\u2019t make it sound like I joined a cult.\u201d<\/p>\n

Normally I might have laughed. Mark had always been good at using humor to soften uncomfortable conversations.<\/p>\n

That morning, I didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy would you quit your job yesterday?\u201d<\/p>\n

He leaned back.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause I don\u2019t see the point anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe paycheck is usually the point.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know what I mean.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, Mark. I really don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

He studied me, then said casually, \u201cWhy keep working? Your inheritance is enough for both of us.\u201d<\/p>\n

The kitchen seemed to go silent.<\/p>\n

Sympathy cards were stacked beside the toaster. Dad\u2019s obituary was open on my tablet. His final voicemail was still saved on my phone because I could not bring myself to delete it.<\/p>\n

My husband had apparently looked at all of that and seen retirement.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat inheritance?\u201d<\/p>\n

Mark frowned.<\/p>\n

\u201cCome on, Clare.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo. Tell me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYour dad sold Hail Mechanical for millions. His house is paid off. He had investments. He barely spent anything.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHow much do you think I\u2019m getting?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know exactly.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen how do you know it\u2019s enough for you to stop working?\u201d<\/p>\n

He hesitated.<\/p>\n

That bothered me more than the answer.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, conservatively, it has to be a few million.\u201d<\/p>\n

Conservatively.<\/p>\n

He had done the math.<\/p>\n

I hadn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

I knew Dad had done well when he sold his commercial heating and cooling company six years earlier. I knew he had investments because he occasionally complained about his financial adviser using phrases like \u201cwealth preservation.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Dad and I had never discussed what I might inherit.<\/p>\n

Mark reached across the table.<\/p>\n

\u201cLook, I\u2019ve worked since I was twenty-two. I\u2019m fifty-five. That\u2019s thirty-three years of quotas, airports, regional meetings, and clients calling on Sundays because apparently air filters are a national emergency. Maybe we finally get to enjoy our lives.\u201d<\/p>\n

I understood that part.<\/p>\n

Mark had been exhausted for years. I had seen him come home from business trips looking ten years older than when he left.<\/p>\n

But understanding why someone wanted something did not make the way they took it reasonable.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou quit without talking to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI knew you\u2019d worry.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat isn\u2019t a defense.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI was going to tell you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are telling me. After you quit.\u201d<\/p>\n

He rubbed his forehead.<\/p>\n

\u201cCan we not do this right now?\u201d<\/p>\n

For one strange second, I nearly laughed.<\/p>\n

Apparently, three days after my father\u2019s death was an inappropriate time to question the major financial decision Mark had made because my father had died.<\/p>\n
