I quietly placed the court summons, his text messages, and my son\u2019s canceled vacation ticket across the dining table.<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Then one of his own children found the note on our refrigerator\u2014and suddenly realized their father had been lying to them, too.<\/p>\n

\u201cMa\u2019am, please don\u2019t panic\u2026 but your son has been sitting outside our grocery store since around four this afternoon. He says there isn\u2019t an adult at home.\u201d<\/p>\n

The moment I heard those words, it felt as though the floor disappeared beneath me.<\/p>\n

I was hundreds of miles away in Chicago.<\/p>\n

My mother had died unexpectedly, and I had spent almost two exhausting weeks organizing funeral arrangements, sorting through legal documents, cleaning out her home, and trying to decide what to do with decades of belongings and memories.<\/p>\n

My eight-year-old son, Leo, was supposed to be safely at home in Columbus with my husband, Gideon.<\/p>\n

At least, that was what I had believed.<\/p>\n

Gideon and I had been married for five years.<\/p>\n

It was my second marriage.<\/p>\n

Leo\u2019s biological father had died when Leo was only two, and for years I convinced myself that one of the best things I could give my son was another dependable father figure.<\/p>\n

Gideon already had two children from a previous relationship.<\/p>\n

Roger was eleven.<\/p>\n

Camila was nine.<\/p>\n

Their mother lived in another state, so they often stayed with us for long stretches.<\/p>\n

From the outside, we looked like the perfect blended family.<\/p>\n

Five people going out for Sunday dinners.<\/p>\n

Birthday cakes.<\/p>\n

Weekend road trips.<\/p>\n

Holiday photographs.<\/p>\n

Smiling faces.<\/p>\n

But as the years passed, I started noticing little differences in the way Gideon treated Leo.<\/p>\n

Differences I repeatedly explained away.<\/p>\n

Whenever Gideon took Roger fishing, Leo would look up excitedly and ask:<\/p>\n

\u201cCan I come too?\u201d<\/p>\n

Gideon would smile.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you\u2019re a little older, buddy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Except Roger had started going fishing with him when he was exactly Leo\u2019s age.<\/p>\n

At Christmas, Gideon bought Roger a pair of roller skates.<\/p>\n

Camila received a new tablet.<\/p>\n

Leo opened his present and found an electric shoe dryer.<\/p>\n

Gideon looked proud of himself.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s practical. Your sneakers are always soaking wet when you come home.\u201d<\/p>\n

Leo smiled politely.<\/p>\n

\u201cThanks, Gideon. I can probably warm my gloves on it, too.\u201d<\/p>\n

I should have understood more than I did that day.<\/p>\n

But I didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

In March, Gideon brought home brochures from a resort in Hilton Head.<\/p>\n

He placed them on the kitchen table along with a preliminary reservation.<\/p>\n

All five of us were included.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs soon as school gets out,\u201d he announced, \u201cwe\u2019re spending a week at the beach.\u201d<\/p>\n

Leo could barely contain his excitement.<\/p>\n

He talked about the ocean constantly.<\/p>\n

Then, on May 24, my mother died.<\/p>\n

There was no warning.<\/p>\n

I booked the first flight I could find to Chicago.<\/p>\n

Before leaving, I stood in the kitchen with Gideon and practically begged him:<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease don\u2019t call me about little household problems while I\u2019m gone. If something leaks or a bill arrives or some chore needs doing, handle it. I\u2019m going to be completely overwhelmed.\u201d<\/p>\n

He pulled me into a hug.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou deal with your mom\u2019s affairs. I\u2019ll handle everything here.\u201d<\/p>\n

My trip lasted longer than expected.<\/p>\n

But every single day, I asked about Leo.<\/p>\n

And every day, Gideon reassured me.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s doing great.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEating fine.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWatching television.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPlaying.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t worry about anything.\u201d<\/p>\n

Leo also sent me short texts.<\/p>\n

\u201cI ate dinner, Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEverything is okay.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLove you.\u201d<\/p>\n

So I believed them.<\/p>\n
