They didn\u2019t promise to stay in contact.<\/p>\n

At Frankfurt Airport, they wished each other well and walked in opposite directions.<\/p>\n

And somehow, that brief conversation was exactly enough.<\/p>\n

Linda\u2019s tour group gathered at eight the next morning.<\/p>\n

Twenty-four travelers stood around a sign held by their guide, Greta, an energetic thirty-five-year-old woman who seemed to genuinely enjoy meeting people.<\/p>\n

Linda found herself walking beside Patricia, a sixty-nine-year-old retired attorney from Atlanta.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat brings you here?\u201d Patricia asked.<\/p>\n

Linda answered without thinking.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy daughter-in-law told me to stay home for Christmas.\u201d<\/p>\n

Beverly glanced at a bag.<\/p>\n

Dennis picked it up.<\/p>\n

Dennis made a tiny gesture toward the escalator.<\/p>\n

Beverly understood immediately.<\/p>\n

Watching them hurt more than Linda expected.<\/p>\n

She had once been half of a partnership like that.<\/p>\n

Paul had been good at dreaming.<\/p>\n
