The family who had erased me for seven years walked into my hotel as if they still owned a piece of my future.<\/p>\n

My father didn\u2019t say hello.<\/p>\n

He didn\u2019t ask how I\u2019d been.<\/p>\n

He crossed the polished marble lobby, glanced at the brass lights, fresh flowers, and weekend guests checking in, then said loudly enough for my front desk manager to hear,<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, you think owning a little hotel makes you better than us now?\u201d<\/p>\n

The lobby seemed to pause.<\/p>\n

Behind him stood my mother in a carefully chosen navy wrap dress, both hands folded around a small clutch as if she\u2019d rehearsed looking harmless.<\/p>\n

My brother Derek stood beside her in a stiff collared shirt.<\/p>\n

His wife, Cassandra, scrolled through her phone like the entire scene was beneath her.<\/p>\n

Seven years.<\/p>\n

No birthday calls.<\/p>\n

No message when I graduated.<\/p>\n

Nothing when I bought my first property, sold it, reinvested, failed, started over, and eventually returned to Savannah as owner of the Aldren.<\/p>\n

Now they were standing beneath my chandelier on a Friday night, expecting me to become small again.<\/p>\n

I kept my voice even.<\/p>\n

\u201cWelcome to the Aldren. Do you have a reservation?\u201d<\/p>\n

Dad laughed.<\/p>\n

It was the same laugh I remembered from childhood\u2014the one that made every room feel smaller because the joke was always me.<\/p>\n

\u201cA reservation?\u201d he repeated, looking at my mother. \u201cShe\u2019s asking whether we have a reservation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mom gave me the soft smile she always used when she wanted something.<\/p>\n

\u201cMaya, sweetheart, we didn\u2019t even realize this was your hotel. We\u2019re here for Derek\u2019s company dinner. He\u2019s being recognized tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n

Derek glanced at me once, then looked away.<\/p>\n

That glance told me plenty.<\/p>\n

I stepped behind the desk and checked the event list.<\/p>\n

Hollis Group had reserved the rooftop for a private client dinner.<\/p>\n

Derek Lawson was on the list.<\/p>\n

One seat.<\/p>\n

No family guests.<\/p>\n

No plus-three.<\/p>\n

I looked back up.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have one confirmed seat under Derek Lawson. The rooftop is a private event tonight, so I can\u2019t add guests without approval from the host company.\u201d<\/p>\n

Derek\u2019s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n

\u201cCan you just call upstairs and sort it out?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI can contact the event coordinator, but the guest list belongs to Hollis Group.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dad stepped closer.<\/p>\n

\u201cMaya,\u201d he said, lowering his voice, \u201cwe drove three hours. Your mother is tired. Surely you can find your family somewhere to sit.\u201d<\/p>\n

Your family.<\/p>\n
