What we thought was a simple family photo turned into a discovery that changed everything we knew about the family my daughter had lost—and the one she never knew was still looking for her.

Last Monday, my daughter’s teacher asked every child to bring a family photo for a class project.

My seven-year-old, Sophie, was adopted.

She knew she’d had biological parents before us, and we’d always answered her questions as gently and honestly as we could.

They had both died in a car accident when she was a baby.

That evening, I showed her dozens of pictures from our family albums.

She chose one of us at the beach.

Or so I thought.

The next afternoon, the school called.

When I arrived, Sophie’s class was still seated at their desks. Her teacher, Mrs. Parker, looked irritated.

“Your daughter brought something completely inappropriate for a second-grade project.”

She handed me a folded newspaper clipping.

My stomach dropped.

I’d kept it in a box at the top of my closet.

It was an article about the accident that killed Sophie’s biological parents, with a photograph beneath the headline.

Her mother and father, smiling together.

“I wanted my first family too,” Sophie whispered.

My anger vanished.

Before I could respond, Mrs. Parker picked up the classroom phone.

“I asked Mr. Harris to join us. I think the principal should decide whether this can be included in the project.”

A minute later, Mr. Harris entered.

Mrs. Parker handed him the clipping.

“This is what Sophie brought.”

He glanced at it.

Then stopped.
