My Son Asked Me Not to Come to His Graduation – Then His Girlfriend Called and Said, ‘Please Come. He Doesn’t Know I Found Out’
My son asked me not to attend the graduation I had waited years to see. The night before, his girlfriend called and quietly told me to come anyway.
Sophie pulled several folded pages from her purse.
At first, I didn’t take them.
We were standing outside the restaurant restroom while my son sat twenty feet away with the father I hadn’t seen in almost eleven years.
And Sophie had just told me she was pregnant.
“Found what?”
She glanced toward the dining room.
“Daniel printed them at my apartment.”
“What are they?”
“I think you should read them.”
I took the pages.
The first was an email from Richard to Daniel, dated six weeks earlier.
I barely made it through the opening lines before my stomach tightened.
“I know your mother told you I walked away. I understand why she did. But before you decide whether you want me in your child’s life, you deserve to know what happened after I left.”
I looked at Sophie.
“What does he mean, ‘your mother told you I walked away’?”
She went pale.
“Amanda—”
“What has Richard been telling my son?”
She lowered her voice.
“I don’t think Daniel knows what to believe.”
Just then, the restroom door opened and a woman stepped out.
Sophie gently touched my arm.
“Not here.”
She was right.
