To keep wolves from knocking politely.

That summer, Grandma spent each evening on the porch swing. Some days she remembered everything that had happened. Other days, she remembered only that I came when she needed me.

Either was enough.

One evening at sunset, she squeezed my hand and said, “Your grandfather built this house so family would have a place to return.”

I looked at the locked gate, the quiet beach, and the sister who no longer had a key.

“Then I’m glad,” I said, “we finally learned who family is.”
